The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sued President Muhammadu Buhari
\nover his directive to the military to be \u201cruthless\u201d with ballot box
\nsnatchers.<\/p>\n

In a suit filed before the federal high court in Abuja, the party asked
\nthe court to declare that Buhari\u2019s directive is unconstitutional, unlawful
\nand void.<\/p>\n

The party also sued Mohammed Bello, minister of the federal capital
\nterritory (FCT), before a FCT high court over the \u201cgigantic broom\u201d erected
\nby the All Progressives Congress (APC) near Abuja city gate.<\/p>\n

It urged the court to issue an order compelling the minister to
\ninvestigate allegations of intimidation and illegality which poses
\npotential threat of violence and disunity the structure may cause.<\/p>\n

The party said this follows the permission of the FCT administration or
\nits failure to take action against the broom which it said is an \u201cimproper
\nstructure\u201d.<\/p>\n

On Monday President Muhammadu Buhari said he had given the military and
\nthe police the order to be ruthless, stating that those who snatch ballot
\nboxes will pay with their lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really gave the military and police order to be ruthless,\u201d Buhari had
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnybody who thinks he has enough influence in his locality to lead a body
\nof thugs to snatch ballot boxes or disturbs the voting system, will do so
\nat the expense of his own life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comment was criticised by some Nigerians who described it as
\nunconstitutional.<\/p>\n

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said the military has
\nno business in the election business, and that ballot box snatchers should
\nnot be shot but prosecuted according to the law.<\/p>\n

In the suit filed on Thursday, the party asked the court to issue a
\ndeclaration that the military are not under any obligation to carry out
\nthe president\u2019s order regarding the elections.<\/p>\n

It also asked the court to declare that Buhari lacks powers to deploy
\ntroops of the armed forces for the general election without the approval
\nof the national assembly.<\/p>\n

The party urged the court to issue an order of perpetual injunction
\nrestraining the military from participating \u201cor playing any role
\nwhatsoever\u201d in the general election without the approval of the national
