The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the governor of Ekiti<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\n
State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to ensure fairness in the composition of his
\ncabinet. Dr. Fayemi, who became governor after the July 14 2018
\ngubernatorial election, is yet to announce a cabinet.<\/p>\n

The request was made by the human rights organization in a statement
\nreleased on Tuesday, 5th March, 2019. The statement was signed by its
\nDirector, Professor Ishaq Akintola.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have full confidence in Dr. Fayemi\u201d MURIC said. \u201cThough he is a
\nChristian, he was fair to Muslims during his first term in office as
\ngovernor of the state between 2010 and 2014. He appointed Muslims into his
\ncabinet and also approved use of hijab for female Muslim students in the
\nstate\u2019s public schools. We expect him to continue the good work.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut his successor, Ayodele Fayose, was a big disappointment, a square peg
\nin a square hole. He was a bigoted Christian and a Muslim-hater primus
\ninter pareil. He ran an all-Christian administration. All 14
\ncommissioners, all 14 permanent secretaries, all board chairmen (except
\nthe Muslim pilgrims board) were Christians. The secretary to the state
\ngovernment and even Fayose\u2019s chief of staff were both Christians. He
\nrefused to make any amendments despite repeated complaints by the Muslims.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder Fayose\u2019s watch, Muslims were brutally attacked inside mosques by
\nsponsored masquerades. Under Fayose\u2019s watch, mosques were pulled down in
\nthe state while Arabic schools were shut. Fayose\u2019s four years were years
\nof executive brigandage. He will go down in history as the worst governor
\nEkiti State ever had.<\/p>\n

\u201cMuslims in Ekiti State cannot just leave everything to chance after such
\na nightmarish four-year term under Fayose. Their Allah-given fundamental
\nrights have been trampled upon for too long. They were denied the right to
\nhold political posts, the right to participate in governance, the right to
\ngainful employment and, by inference, the right to have access to economic
\nmeans of survival.<\/p>\n

\u201cMURIC has a duty to speak up for such people. The Glorious Qur\u2019an says,
\n\u2018Why should you not rise in the cause of Allah to defend men, women and
\nchildren who are oppressed due to their weakness? The weak ones cry out,
\n\u201cOur Lord! rescue us from this city (Ekiti State?) whose people are
\noppressors; and raise for us from Thee one who will protect us, and send
\nto us a helper!\u2019\u201d (Qur\u2019an\u00a0 4:75-76).<\/p>\n

Ekiti Muslims have been oppressed, downpressed and repressed. They cried
\nout at the time and MURIC echoed their cry in compliance with the above
\nverse. We are now asking the incumbent to rise to the task. Having
\nsuffered under \u2018Fir\u2018awn\u2019 (Pharaoh) for four consecutive years, Ekiti
\nMuslims need a \u2018protector\u2019 (Waliyy) and a \u2018helper\u2019 (Nasir) at this hour.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe therefore look forward to Governor Fayemi to rise to the occasion. We
\nhave always maintained that the religion of our president or governor in
\nNigeria does not matter so long as there is good governance. Merit should
\nbe the yardstick. We will always support a good Christian or a good Muslim
\nwho is credible, transparent, diligent, who respects the rule of law and
\nwho is fair to all. Sentimentality is a luxury in which MURIC does not
\nindulge.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt present, both Governor Kayode Fayemi and his deputy are Christians.
\nBut we are very hopeful because the door is still open for several other
\nappointments. We expect, in all fairness, that a Muslim will emerge as
\neither chief of staff or secretary to the state government. This is apart
\nfrom other cabinet and board appointments that should be fairly and
\nproportionately shared between Christians and Muslims in the state. Once
\nagain, we reaffirm our reliance on Dr. Fayemi\u2019s cool-headedness, his
\nfriendly mien and his gentlemanly disposition.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we draw the curtain, we reaffirm our full confidence in Governor
\nKayode Fayemi. This statement serves as a subtle reminder to the governor
\nto give fair share to Muslims in his state as a right and as a form of
\nredress for the misrule and tyranny suffered by them under Ayodele Fayose.
\nIn return, we charge Muslims in the state to cooperate fully with the
\nincumbent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
