The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the non-use of<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

card readers may lead to cancellation of elections.<\/p>\n

The commission said this four days to the governorship and state assembly
\nelections.<\/p>\n

It denied allegations that it was selective in the use of smart card
\nreaders in the presidential and national assembly elections.<\/p>\n

Some persons and groups including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had
\nalleged the commission did not enforce the use of card readers in some
\nstates during the presidential election.<\/p>\n

There have also been speculations that INEC will not ensure strict
\ncompliance with the card readers during the governorship and state
\nassemblies elections.<\/p>\n

But in a statement issued on Tuesday, Festus Okoye, INEC director of voter
\neducation and publicity, described the claims as \u201cabsolutely false and
\nwithout any basis whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Okoye said the use of the smart card reader in the elections is not only
\nmandatory but its deliberate non-use attracts possible prosecution of
\nerring officials.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is in addition to the voiding of any result emanating from such
\nunits or areas as was done in the Presidential and National Assembly
\nelections of February 23. 2019,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe general public and all officials engaged for the elections are hereby
\ninformed that the Commission is not reconsidering the use of these Smart
\nCard Readers which has greatly improved the credibility of our elections
\nand instilled a high level of public trust in them.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo clear any doubt or ambiguity, we wish to state that the deployment and
\nmandatory use Smart Card Readers in Saturday\u2019s elections will not only be
\nuniform but also universal and the provisions of the Regulations and
\nGuidelines will be strictly and vigorously enforced. All Stakeholders are
\nto note and be guided accordingly please.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
