The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it would
\nhold supplementary elections on March 23 2019, following inconclusive
\nGovernorship and State House of Assembly elections declared in some
\nstates.<\/p>\n

INEC\u2019s National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education
\nCommittee, Festus Okoye, disclosed this on Tuesday night in a statement at
\nthe end of the commission\u2019s meeting in Abuja.<\/p>\n

According to him, the commission met on Monday and reviewed the conduct of
\nthe 29 Governorship and 991 state constituency elections held on 9th March
\n2019 and that in all, the commission declared winners in the Governorship
\nelections in 22 states.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, the Returning Officers (ROs) in Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Kano,
\nPlateau and Sokoto states declared the Governorship elections
\ninconclusive.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsequently, the commission will conduct supplementary elections on
\nSaturday 23rd March 2019 to conclude the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cSupplementary elections will also hold in polling units in all states
\nwhere state assembly elections were declared inconclusive and winners
\ncould not be declared.<\/p>\n

\u201cDetails of the constituencies including number of polling units and
\nregistered voters will be published on our website tomorrow Wednesday 13th
\nMarch 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe elections were declared inconclusive for a combination of reasons,
\nmainly the discontinuation of use of the Smart Card Readers (SCRs) midway
\ninto the elections or the failure to deploy them, over-voting and
\nwidespread disruption in many polling units.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn compliance with the Margin of Lead Principle derived from Sections 26
\nand 53 of the Electoral Act mm (as amended) and paragraph 41(e) and 43(b)
\nof the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the conduct of elections, the
\noutcome of these elections could not be determined without conducting
\npolls in the affected polling units. Hence the commission\u2019s decision to
\nconduct supplementary elections in line with this principle.<\/p>\n

\u201cFurthermore, the commission has considered a report submitted by the
\nResident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Bauchi State on the disruption
\nof the collation at the Tafawa Balewa LGA collation center, which led to
\nthe cancellation of results for the entire local government.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Commission found that there are issues that need further
\ninvestigation and has set up a team led by a National Commissioner to
\nresolve them,\u201d Okoye said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
