{"id":65631,"date":"2019-03-19T22:54:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-19T21:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=65631"},"modified":"2019-03-19T22:54:00","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T21:54:00","slug":"court-restrains-inec-from-announcing-rivers-governorship-elections-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/court-restrains-inec-from-announcing-rivers-governorship-elections-results\/","title":{"rendered":"Court Restrains INEC From Announcing Rivers Governorship Elections Results"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m1008654875827582044\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National<br \/>\nElectoral Commission (INEC) to halt the collation and announcement of the<br \/>\nresult of the governorship and house of assembly elections in Rivers State<br \/>\nheld on March 9, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The commission had rescheduled the collation of the results that had been<br \/>\npreviously suspended for Wednesday, after it was alleged that the African<br \/>\nAction Congress (AAC) candidate was leading in the results so far declared<br \/>\nat the various collations centres.<\/p>\n<p>There was a disruption of the collation process at some collation centres<br \/>\nwhich led to the suspension the electoral process.<\/p>\n<p>However, after the report by a fact-finding committee set up to<br \/>\ninvestigate electoral irregularities that characterised the poll, INEC<br \/>\nscheduled the continuation of the process for Wednesday, March 20, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>However, Justice Iyang Ewa has ordered the commission to halt its<br \/>\nscheduled resumption of the announcement of the result, based on an ex<br \/>\nparte application filed by the AAC candidates.<\/p>\n<p>The applicant prayed the court for an order of interim injunction<br \/>\nrestraining INEC from resuming, collating or announcing the results of the<br \/>\nsuspended elections in Rivers State.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Ewa ordered INEC to appear before the court on Friday for the<br \/>\nhearing of the suit filed against it by AAC and its candidate in the<br \/>\nelection.<\/p>\n<p>He also affirmed that the court would give its final order after it<br \/>\nconcludes the suits brought before it by the plaintiffs.<\/p>\n<p>INEC, represented by Ransome Uwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN),<br \/>\napproached the court with a motion challenging its jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed Abali, counsel to the plaintiffs, however, objected to the<br \/>\napplication of INEC, informing the court that the order issued on Monday<br \/>\nasking the electoral body to show cause why the requests of the plaintiffs<br \/>\nshould not be granted had not been obeyed.<\/p>\n<p>The judge ordered the electoral umpire to halt the proceedings till the<br \/>\ncourt gives the final order.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"conversation-footer\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to halt the collation and announcement of the result of the governorship and house of assembly&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":53029,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[17],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-65631","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-exclusive"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
