President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Abuja said the dark days of impunity
\nare gone for good, assuring Nigerians that his administration will remain
\nfocused and committed to creating an inclusive and diversified economy.<\/p>\n
Receiving the leadership of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors
\n(NIQS), led by Mr Obafemi Onashile, President Buhari, again, thanked
\nNigerians for clearly expressing their desire to move the nation forward.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018Let me start by thanking you for your kind prayers,\u2019\u2019 the President told
\nmembers of the Institute, who came to congratulate him on his re-election
\nand pledge their solidarity with his administration.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018Nigerians have clearly spoken of their desire for the country to move
\nforward. On our part, we remain committed to the Change Agenda. By the
\ngrace of God, and with your continued prayers and support, the dark days
\nof impunity are gone for good,\u2019\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n
President Buhari used the occasion to highlight the administration\u2019s
\nachievements in stimulating the economy in the past three years, noting
\nthat growing the nation\u2019s economy means \u2018\u2018national growth must impact the
\nsilent majority.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018This is why in the past three years; we focused on key job-creating
\nsectors such as agriculture and infrastructure development.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018You will all recall that our agriculture and infrastructure programmes
\ncontributed to our exit from recession. This is a clear example of how, if
\nwe push ‘inclusive’ job-creating policies, growth will follow.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018We will remain committed to these and other programmes to ensure the
\nsuccess of our nation is felt by the majority of Nigerians,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
On the incessant building collapses across the country, the President
\nwarned that those responsible for such incidents of professional
\nnegligence will feel the full wrath of the law.<\/p>\n
He told members of the Institute that the recent tragic incident in Lagos,
\nand many others across the country, were reminder of the need to strictly
\nadhere to quality standards on construction projects.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018Young innocent lives must never be lost due to incompetence and greed.
\nSimply put, no corners must be cut. I want to assure you that those
\nresponsible for such incidents of professional negligence will feel the
\nfull wrath of the law,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
The President welcomed recommendations and suggestions from the Institute
\non how to enhance the construction industry, directing that they make a
\nformal submission to the Minister of Power, Works and Housing as soon as
\npossible.<\/p>\n
In his presentation, the President of NIQS, Onashile appealed to the
\nFederal Government to create a Directorate of Quantity Surveying and
\nProjects Costs Management to address the issue of unclear delineation of
\nprofessional functions amongst construction professions within the
\nGovernment.<\/p>\n
Onashile also made a case for Quantity Surveyors to be mandated and
\nallowed to undertake cost management of projects of all forms on behalf of
\nGovernment, among others.<\/p>\n
The Institute while congratulating the President on his well-deserved
\nre-election, expressed its support and \u2018\u2018total confidence in his
\nadministration and leadership direction which have brought hope, progress
\nand stability to Nigeria.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
A highpoint of the visit was the conferment of the Fellowship Grade of the
\nNIQS-the highest cadre of membership- on President Buhari. The President
\nwas also honoured with the \u2018\u2018Life Champion of Anti-Corruption Crusade in
\nNigeria\u2019\u2019 Award.<\/p>\n
