\nCross River State Government is seeking the support and cooperation of the
\nFederal Government to construct dams in order to achieve a viable agro
\nsector as well as sustaining it\u2019s industrialization drive.<\/p>\n

Governor Ben Ayade solicited the support Wednesday, in Calabar when he
\nreceived the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Water
\nResources, Mrs. Comfort Ekaro who is on her maiden tour of Nigeria\u2019s 12
\nbasin development authorities in his office in Calabar, where he pointed
\nout that water remains a vital component in the planning of the state\u2019s
\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a relationship between water abundance and hospitality. If you
\ndon\u2019t have adequate water, you can\u2019t provide that kind of hospitality that
\nis expected. Cross River is the cleanest and the neatest state and you
\ncan\u2019t do that in the absence of water,\u201d Ayade said.<\/p>\n

On the value the development of water resources will add to the state, the
\ngovernor disclosed: \u201cCross River is participating under the accelerated
\nagric development program, we are also actively involved in so many value
\nchains particularly maize, yellow maize, soya bean; we are doing cocoa, we
\nare doing banana and we are doing rice.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have built industries that will give full start-to-end process
\napplication and value addition. We have the cocoa processing plant in
\nIkom, we have the vitamin rice processing mill in Ogoja, we have the seed
\nand seedling factory and we have an ultramodern feed mill that will
\nrequire so much of soya bean and then we have the integrated poultry. In
\nall of these, we can\u2019t sustain the massive requirement of maize, soya
\nbean, and rice to feed our industries without dams, without irrigation.
\nObviously Cross River State is blessed; you have to cross a river to get
\nto almost everywhere.\u201d
\nAyade who also stressed the need for \u201ca relationship with the ministry of
\nwater resources that is deeper than mere politics,\u201d lamented the
\npeculiarities of the state\u2019s demography which he said required special
\nattention.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the indices on the demography prove that Cross River State is in
\ncritical need of the federal government attention. Unfortunately, what has
\nhappened is that social reverse stoichiometry is the one in place. The
\nsmaller and more compact you are, the more resources you have, the more
\nmoney you get which negates the African theory of providing a shoulder for
\na weaker partner and brother to lean on. Cross River State is almost on
\nits knees,\u201d Ayade said and solicited the country\u2019s budget to be subjected
\nto geographical sensitivity analysis in order to ensure a fair
\ndistribution of resources.<\/p>\n

Cross River currently leads in the comity of States implementing the
\nWater, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) action plans with five local
\ngovernment areas declared Open Defecation Free so far.
\nMrs. Ekaro, in her remarks solicited the state\u2019s support in the provision
\nof clean, safe and potable water for residents as well as sustaining the
\ngains on sanitation.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have already supported (but), we need more so that we can have good
\nsanitation, we have toilets everywhere so that people don\u2019t go defecating
\noutside and you know the problem associated with that-girls are pressed
\nlate in the night and they have to go out, they could be raped; even with
\nmen, there could be snakes around and somebody had been bitten by a snake.
\nThere was a report and of course, he died from there- just trying to
\ndefecate outside,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Ekaro,\u00a0 while hinting that this was her first point of call outside her
\noffice since her resumption as permanent secretary in February, commended
\nthe giant strides made by the Ayade\u2019s administration, describing them as
\n\u201cmind blowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
