Rivers State Governor,\u00a0 Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has inaugurated the Judicial
\nCommission of Inquiry to investigate the violence,\u00a0 killings and other
\nrelated matters which occurred during the February 23 and March 9, 2019
\nGeneral Elections in Rivers State.<\/p>\n
The governor also inaugurated the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the
\nviolent invasion and attack on the Rivers State Judiciary and destruction
\nof public properties which occurred at the Judiciary Complex on 11 May,
\n2018.<\/p>\n
Governor Wike inaugurated both commissions on Thursday\u00a0 at the Government
\nHouse,\u00a0 Port Harcourt,\u00a0 with a charge that they should submit\u00a0 their
\nreports after 30days.<\/p>\n
While Justice Monina Danagogo is the\u00a0 Chairman of the Judicial Commission
\non Election Violence,\u00a0 Justice Simeon C. Amadi chairs the commission\u00a0 on
\nthe invasion and attack on the Rivers State Judiciary Complex.<\/p>\n
The governor said though the function\u00a0 before the two Judicial Commissions
\nof Inquiry would be tasking,\u00a0 he urged the members\u00a0 to diligently work to
\ndeliver within the scheduled period.<\/p>\n
For the Judicial Commission of Inquiry to Investigate the violence,
\nKillings and related matters during the 2019 General Elections,\u00a0 Governor
\nWike said some of their terms of reference include:<\/p>\n
\u25aaInvestigate the remote and immediate causes of the violence,\u00a0 killings
\nand other related acts\/matters which occurred during the February 23 and
\nMarch 9, 2019 General Elections in Rivers State.<\/p>\n
\u25aaidentify the sponsors and perpetrators of the various acts of violence
\nand killings in the state during the period of the aforesaid elections.<\/p>\n
\u25aaidentify\u00a0 the victims of the violence including\u00a0 those killed during the
\nsaid elections.<\/p>\n
\u25aaidentify the motives if any behind the said violence,\u00a0 killings and other
\nrelated acts\/matters during the aforesaid general elections in Rivers
\nState.<\/p>\n
Governor Wike said that the Judicial Commission of Inquiry investigating
\nthe violence during the 2019 General Elections has 10 terms of reference.<\/p>\n
For the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the invasion of the State
\nJudiciary,\u00a0 Governor Wike the panel has 14 terms of reference.\u00a0 Some of
\nthem are:<\/p>\n
\u25aaascertain and identify the immediate and remote causes of and\/or the
\nmotives behind the violent invasion and attack on the Rivers State
\nJudiciary and destruction of public properties which occurred at the
\nJudiciary Complex,\u00a0 Port\u00a0 Harcourt on 11th May, 2018.<\/p>\n
\u25aaidentify the persons who participated in, masterminded, counseled\u00a0 or
\nprocured others to participate in the violent invasion,\u00a0 attack,
\ndisruption of activities of the Rivers State Judiciary and destruction of
\npublic properties which occurred at the Judiciary Complex,\u00a0 Port Harcourt
\non 11th Day of May, 2018.<\/p>\n
\u25aaidentify and ascertain,\u00a0 the targets of the said invasion,\u00a0 violence and
\ndisruption of activities at the Rivers\u00a0 State Judiciary Complex on the
\naforementioned date.<\/p>\n
Governor Wike said that it is unfortunate that anyone\u00a0 would plot the
\nattack on the Judiciary,\u00a0 which is the last hope of everyone.\u00a0 He pointed
\nout that the former Rivers State Governor who shut down the courts, was
\nthe first to seek refuge when the courts were re-opened.<\/p>\n
Responding,\u00a0 Chairman of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate
\nthe violence,\u00a0 killings and other related matters during the 2019 General
\nElections,\u00a0 Justice Monima Danagogo said that the commission\u00a0 will carry
\nout its duties in line with the extant\u00a0 laws.<\/p>\n
He said that the members of the Commission\u00a0 will carry out the function
\nwith dispatch as they have a duty to the State.<\/p>\n
Also speaking,\u00a0 Chairman of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the
\nviolent invasion and attack on the Rivers State Judiciary, Justice Simeon
\nC. Amadi said the invasion\u00a0 of the State Judiciary cannot be swept\u00a0 under
\nthe carpet.<\/p>\n
He said that the desecration of the temple of justice is anathema to any
\ndemocracy.<\/p>\n
