Concerned Nigerians, a human rights group, has condemned the rearrest of
\nJones Abiri, a Bayelsa-based journalist.<\/p>\n

Abiri was arrested on Saturday, months after he regained his freedom from
\nillegal detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).<\/p>\n

According to his lawyer, the Federal Ministry of Justice is set to arraign
\nhim for treasonable felony.<\/p>\n

A statement by Deji Adeyanju, Convener of Concerned Nigerians, issued on
\nSunday, noted that Abiri\u2019s rearrest is an \u201cassault on press freedom\u201d.<\/p>\n

Stating that the action of the DSS is an injustice, Adeyanju said: \u201cWe
\ncondemn in its entirety the gestapo manner in which a Bayelsa based
\nJournalist and Publisher, Jones Abiri was rearrested by men suspected to
\nbe men of the Department of State Services.<\/p>\n

\u201cConcerned Nigerians condemn the continuous ill-treatment of Jones Abiri,
\nwho was just performing his civic duties of gathering information for the
\ngeneral public and holding the government accountable. The rearrest of
\nJournalist, Jones Abiri, who was released a few months ago by a competent
\ncourt of jurisdiction after a prolonged incarceration by the DSS, is a
\nclear affront on press freedom.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe injustice being meted on Jones Abiri is troubling and it further
\nattests to the fact that Nigeria is fast drifting into fascism where
\npeople will be tagged enemies of the state for being critical of the
\ngovernment. If this kind of behaviour continues, it\u2019s going to result in
\njournalists being afraid to ask questions and people being afraid to stand
\nup for the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cA free press is one of the building blocks of our democracy. Without it,
\ndemocracy is in danger. Nigerians, regardless of their political beliefs,
\nhave the right to stand up and ask government tough questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adeyanju also urged the DSS \u201cto regard journalism as a noble service and
\nnot a crime,\u201d just as he appealed to security agents to \u201calways behave in
\na mature and professional manner and to avoid arresting and forcing
\njournalists to name their sources for merely doing their job\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
