{"id":66253,"date":"2019-04-16T16:45:56","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T15:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=66253"},"modified":"2019-04-16T16:45:56","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T15:45:56","slug":"corruption-high-court-judge-arrested-inside-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/corruption-high-court-judge-arrested-inside-court\/","title":{"rendered":"CORRUPTION: High Court Judge Arrested Inside Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There was a drama at the premises of an Ikeja High Court as officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, a former judge of the Federal High Court, after corruption charges against her were struck out.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that about 10 officials of the EFCC surrounded Mrs Ofili-Ajumogobia as she attempted to leave the courtroom at 10.24 a.m. after the ruling by Justice Hakeem Oshodi.<\/p>\n<p>Upon sighting the officials, the judge made a hasty retreat and went back upstairs into Justice Oshodi\u2019s courtroom to seek the protection of the court from the EFCC operatives.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Oshodi, when notified about the development, said there was nothing he could do as \u201cthe file had been closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The embattled former judge and her husband, who was with her, were observed frantically making various phone calls.<\/p>\n<p>Godwin Obla, a lawyer and Mrs Ofili-Ajumogobia\u2019s co-defendant, was however allowed to exit the court premises by officials of the EFCC.<\/p>\n<p>However, when Justice Oshodi\u2019s court rose, she was arrested at 11.47 a.m. by some EFCC officials who whisked her away in a white Hilux van with Abuja plate number BWR637AT.<\/p>\n<p>NAN reports that earlier, Justice Oshodi, in a ruling struck out the 31-count charge filed by the EFCC against Mrs Ofili-Ajumogobia and Mr Obla on the grounds that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the suit.<\/p>\n<p>The judge ruled that based on the judicial precedent set by the case of Justice Nganjiwa Vs FRN, the EFCC had \u201cjumped the gun\u201d in filing the first amended charge.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Oshodi noted that the anti-graft commission had not followed the procedures set by the National Judicial Council (NJC) in disciplining erring judicial officers.
