Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),
\nAttahiru Jega, has accused university lecturers used as ad hoc staff
\nduring the 2019 elections of conniving with politicians to rig elections
\nthereby compromising the integrity of the polls.<\/p>\n
He stated this in Kano, in his remarks at the 15th annual conference of
\nFulbright Alumni Association of Nigeria (FAAN), which took place at the
\nDangote Business School at Bayero University, Kano.<\/p>\n
Speaking as the chairman at the opening ceremony of the two-day
\nconference, Jega decried the attitude of some lecturers during the poll,
\nwhose action he said paved the way for faulty recruitment process of the
\npolitical class during the polls, thereby betraying the confidence the
\nelectoral body reposed in them.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cLook at what happened during the last elections, and the story
\nof irregularities being spread even in the four walls of BUK. The
\npoliticians, through crooked means, got alliances with lecturers in the
\nuniversity to compromise the system and they perpetrated all sort of
\nirregularities, which paved way for a faulty process for the continued
\nentrenchment of bad people in governance.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe I am preaching to the converted or I am talking nonsense, but
\nfrankly speaking, I am beginning to think that we are not taking the
\nobligations of scholarship and intellectual engagement with the
\nseriousness it deserves.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the major crisis in Nigeria\u2019s democracy is that our electoral
\nintegrity has been under assault, compromised and undermined by those
\nwho have control over the process.”<\/p>\n
Speaking on the theme of the conference, Professor Mohammed Sanni
\nAbdulkadir, the Vice Chancellor, Kogi State University, Anyigba, urged
\nthe Nigerian government to improve the\u00a0 funding of security agencies
\nfighting insurgency and other organised crime in various fronts across
\nthe country, with a view to motivating them to be able to execute their
