The Presidency has said that Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association<\/div>\n

of Nigeria operates same as Afenifere and Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo
\nsocio-cultural groups and thus should not be criminalised.<\/p>\n

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity,
\nGarba Shehu, who was a guest on Channels TV\u2019s Sunrise Daily on
\nTuesday, urged Nigerians not to politicise the meeting, arguing that
\nall stakeholders have a role to play in ensuring that the nation
\nremains safe.<\/p>\n

The Police had come under fire recently for holding a meeting with the
\nherders and urging them to please assist in curbing the insecurity in
\nthe nation.<\/p>\n

The President\u2019s aide, however, said, \u201cIt is a mistake to say the
\nNigerian government is talking to bandits.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Miyetti Allah group is like Ohanaeze and Afenifere. It is a
\nsocio-cultural group. There are criminals within the Yoruba race and
\nyou cannot say because of that, Afenifere is a group of criminals.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Nigerian government is speaking with the leadership of the Fulani
\nherders association, Miyetti Allah.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked if it is true that the herders were offered N100m to help
\nmaintain peace, Shehu said, \u201cThat is 100 per cent untrue. I have
\nconfirmed that in all the meetings held, money was never discussed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of the issues were about the involvement of the leadership of
\nMiyetti Allah and getting them to prevail upon its members and they
\nare many. We asked them to assist the administration to recover
\nweapons which were owned by a lot of these elements,\u201d Shehu said.<\/p>\n

The presidential aide said it did not directly translate to amnesty,
\nadding that \u201cit is a win-win situation for all because the cattle
\nbreeders also have their issues which they brought to the government;
\nand the more discussions take place, the more interesting it becomes.\u201d<\/p>\n

the President\u2019s aide further stated that state governments would be
\ninvolved in the talks.<\/p>\n

He said some of the herders admitted that they went into crime because
\nthey had been dispossessed of their cattle by rustlers.<\/p>\n

Shehu added, \u201cThese things are being addressed and they are moving to
\nthe next stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn states like Kogi, Benue, Kaduna, Zamfara, Katsina, and Niger, they
\nwill be talking to the governors so that you can use them. They are
\navailable so that you can help the government to caution and control
\nsome of these things unfolding.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his response, however, Emmanuel Onwubiko, the Head of Human Rights
\nWriters Association of Nigeria, faulted the approach of the Presidency.<\/p>\n

Onwubiko said Miyetti Allah had defended violence in the past and as
\nsuch could not be said to be a peaceful organisation like Ohanaeze and
\nAfenifere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
