VOWS TO RESIST\u00a0 ACTIONS\u00a0 LEGITIMATELY<\/p>\n
The attention of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People,
\nMOSOP, has been drawn to concerted plan by the Nigerian Government to
\ncommence oil drilling activities in Ogoniland, using security agencies
\nand other criminally minded non-state actors\u00a0 \u00a0to shield operations of
\nthe oil company.<\/p>\n
The said oil operation, with military cover, is billed to commence in
\nthe coming months, as parties involved have been instructed on their
\nrespective roles. Each of the security agencies listed in the plan has
\nbeen tasked with specific roles and responsibilities, particularly, in
\ntackling voices of dissent in the Ogoni community.<\/p>\n
MOSOP is particularly disturbed about this latest development and
\nactions of the Government, considering its possible negative
\nimplications and the crisis it might cause among the people,\u00a0 in the
\ncommunities and with the company involved.<\/p>\n
It is unfortunate and disappointing that rather than going through the
\nproper and legitimate means and process, the government chooses\u00a0 to
\nignore the people of Ogoni and prefers to engage and impose an oil
\nprospecting company on them, even with an intent to intimidate, suppress
\nand kill the people more with the use of heavily\u00a0 armed security forces.<\/p>\n
As part of this plan, we are aware that\u00a0 some companies have also
\ncommenced some clandestine discussions with agents in and outside Ogoni
\non how to facilitate the success of such operation.<\/p>\n
We appeal to all those involved to discontinue the unholy and selfish
\nalliance and\u00a0 allow the people decide on this matter and make their
\nchoice, without being forced to do so.<\/p>\n
We have consistently stressed that whilst we are not opposed to
\ndiscussions relating to resumption of oil production in Ogoniland, the
\nfederal government and its agents must engage in a broad-based
\ndiscussion with the Ogoni people that addresses the issues of benefits-
\nsharing, community participation and the proper environmental management
\nof the Ogoni ecosystem, including legacy issues arising from the over
\nfour decades of reckless oil operations in the land.<\/p>\n
This is not about the\u00a0 deceit enveloped as corporate social
\nresponsibility(CSR) activities but about sustainable outcomes that can
\ntake\u00a0 the Ogoni people into the forseable future.This is the only way
\nthe government can\u00a0 gain the confidence and acceptance\u00a0 of the Ogoni
\npeople that we are not going back to the same\u00a0 inglorious past of
\nreckless oil exploration\u00a0 and zero benefit to the people and their land.<\/p>\n
MOSOP is ready and will continue to engage and cooperate with any
\nprocess that respects and recognizes the rights of the people and the
\ncommunity, but will vehemently oppose any form of injustice and
\nintimidation of our people.<\/p>\n
MOSOP stands ready to support any\u00a0 genuine economic activity that will
\nbenefit and is in the overall interest of our people, but we will not
\nallow a process that undermines our\u00a0 natural existence and subdues our
\nrights as a people.<\/p>\n
We, therefore, reiterate our avowed position to resist any attempt by
\nthe government and any company or their agents to re-enter any Ogoni
\ncommunity for the purpose of carrying out oil exploration activities
\nby\u00a0 FORCE\u00a0 without due consultation\u00a0 \u00a0and broad-based discussion and
\nagreement with genuine and competent representatives of the people and
\nkey stakeholders in Ogoniland.<\/p>\n
We\u00a0 are prepared to resist them with the last drop of our blood.<\/p>\n
MOSOP charges\u00a0 Ogoni people to remain resolute and resilient in the days
\nahead\u00a0 and be prepared. We also extend our call to our teeming
\nsupporters and members of the international community to take notice of
\nthe proposed devilish and genocidal plan of the Nigerian government
\nagainst the Ogoni people and continue to offer your support to us,
\nespecially in\u00a0 the time of this genocidal conspiracy against us and our
\nland.<\/p>\n
