Balaclava, Mauritius, 13 May 2019 \u2013 Today, The African Airlines<\/div>\n
\n
Association (AFRAA) and Air Mauritius kicked off the 8th African
\nstakeholder\u2019s convention with a call for enhanced collaboration in order
\nto accelerate the development of the sector in Africa.<\/p>\n

Held from 12-14 May 2019 in Mauritius under the theme \u201cWinning
\ntogether\u201d, the convention brings together operators and service
\nproviders with the view to foster dialogue, build sustainable networks
\nin supply chain management, create a competitive environment for
\nbusiness and improve the aviation support base in the continent.<\/p>\n

Speaking as Chief Guest at the Opening Ceremony of the event, Hon.
\nHonourable Ivan Collendavelloo, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of
\nMauritius said: \u201dWe must work together or we will fail together but of
\ncourse we want to win together. Therefore, the only solution is to work
\ntogether. We want to encourage the reduction of barriers between African
\nstates using approaches that take into account the needs of each
\ncountry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Abderrahmane Berth\u00e9, AFRAA Secretary General said: \u201cA successful and
\nviable African aviation industry is achievable, but this requires
\nrigorous efforts as well as close coordination and collaboration by all
\nstakeholders ranging from Governments, regulatory authorities, airports,
\nair navigation service providers, suppliers of the wide range of
\naviation products and services and the customers. Together, we can
\nensure an integrated, interconnected Africa that is competitive within
\nitself and globally.\u201d
\nMr. Berth\u00e9 further reiterated that the purpose of this convention is to
\nestablish lasting relationships and partnerships between aviation
\nstakeholders and airlines for the benefit of African Aviation.
\nMr. Somas Appavou, Chief Executive Officer said: \u201cAfrica is a continent
\nof boundless opportunities. With a population of 1.2 billion, double
\ndigit growth rates in many countries and a fast expanding middle class,
\nour continent has become the new promised land for the development of
\nair travel. Industry partners in Africa will have to take these emerging
\nopportunities and overcome challenges together. This is how we can
\nleverage each other\u2019s strengths and leapfrog the many barriers that no
\nsingle player can overcome alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Appavou pointed out that aviation is a lifeline for small island
\ndeveloping states (SIDS) such as Mauritius and also highlighted the need
\nfor strong partnerships to overcome the competitive and operational
\nhurdles faced by these islands. These include scale, remoteness from
\nsource markets and access to resources and competencies.<\/p>\n

Among other key messages from the convention, all stakeholders were
\nurged to intensify efforts to reduce the crippling high cost of doing
\nbusiness in the Aviation sector in Africa. This includes a call to
\nAfrican governments to reduce taxes, charges and fees imposed on
\nairlines and other key services, as well as continue to make efforts to
\nensure that airlines are able to repatriate their earnings.
\nThe 2019 edition of the Convention features masterclasses where cutting
\nedge ideas, technologies, industry best practices, new opportunities and
\npractical solutions will be presented and discussed by aviation leaders
\nwith the aim of creating a platform for robust discourse.<\/p>\n

Other key topics to be discussed include; The Single African Air
\nTransport Market, Matching Capacity & Demand \u2013 Improving Load Factors,
\nYields, and Profitability, Addressing aviation skills gap in Africa for
\neconomic growth, Mitigating Cybersecurity threat and building cyber
\nresilience just to name a few.<\/p>\n
