President Muhammadu Buhari says he was reluctant to deal with Walter<\/div>\n

Onnoghen, former chief justice of Nigeria (CJN).<\/p>\n

The president had suspended the ex-CJN before he was charged with false
\nassets declaration at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).<\/p>\n

Speaking when leaders of Afenifere, a Pan-Yoruba socio-political group,
\nvisited him on Tuesday, Buhari said Onnoghen had to go because he acted
\nin violation of the office he occupied.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will tell you as Afenifere, that I had to deal, though reluctantly,
\nwith the former chief justice because there were millions of dollars,
\neuros, not to talk of naira, which were not declared,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wonder what sort of conscience some of us have, how can you sit and
\npreside and lock people up for years and even sentence some to death and
\nyet you are not doing what the constitution says you should do by
\noccupying that vital position.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president said his administration is determined to recover stolen
\nfunds and properties within and outside the country.<\/p>\n

He said all the recovered properties would be sold and the money put in
\nthe nation\u2019s treasury to make it impossible to return such properties to
\nthe looters in future.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, we are recovering as much as we can under the system and this time
\naround I said the properties will be sold and the money put in the
\ntreasury,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe last time they were given back their properties but this time
\naround whoever comes after me no matter how generous he is, he cannot
\ntake money from the treasury give it to individuals, it will be
\nimpossible.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut anybody who cannot account for what he has and for refusing to
\ndeclare, we will have to do something about it.\u201d.<\/p>\n

Olabiyi Durojaiye, a former senator, who spoke on behalf of Afenifere,
\nsaid the group was in the presidential villa to rejoice with the
\npresident and the Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on their re-election.<\/p>\n

Durojaiye also commended Buhari for his recognition of June 12,
\ndescribing it as a landmark in the political history of Nigeria.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWe are proud of our contributions to your victory through the
\nYoruba Summit Conference held at the University of Ibadan International
\nConference Centre on January 29,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere, we passed a well-applauded motion urging all the people of
\nWestern Nigeria origin of voting age to vote for your re-election by
\nvirtue of your people-oriented and welfarist APC political programmes
\nand performance. We are happy the people complied.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are also here to commend Your Excellency for your recognition of
\nJune 12 as a landmark in the political history of Nigeria and for naming
\nthe National Stadium in Abuja after Chief MKO Abiola, the hero of
\nNigeria\u2019s pro-Democracy struggle.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are equally glad to note and commend Your Excellency for your
\nefforts to empower the 36 states in Nigeria to have control of the
\npolice as a measure of improving security.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

He said Afenifere was also delighted over the \u201cgiant stride\u201d of the
\nBuhari administration in the field of agriculture, social intervention,
\nrevival and modernisation of rail transportation, continuing efforts to
\ncomplete the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway among other achievements.<\/p>\n

He, however, highlighted some major issues of paramount interest to the
\npeople of south-west region in particular and the unity, progress and
\nhappiness of the entire country in general.<\/p>\n

The Yoruba socio-cultural group made requests bordering on security,
\neducation, youth employment, power supply and agriculture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
