President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Abuja said efforts to ensure<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

autonomy for state legislatures and judiciary will further strengthen
\ndemocracy and deepen inclusiveness of citizens by guaranteeing fairness
\nfor ordinary Nigerians.<\/p>\n

Receiving Report of the Presidential Implementation Committee on
\nFinancial Autonomy of State Legislature and Judiciary, President Buhari
\nsaid the government will study the report and recommendations, and take
\nan appropriate decision.<\/p>\n

“I went through a terrible time getting here for the three times I
\ncontested elections. That’s why I want to stabilise the system so that
\nothers will not pass through the same experience.<\/p>\n

“Both young and ordinary Nigerians depend on leadership to ensure
\njustice is always done. So we must ensure that trust is not compromised.
\nThis administration will take the report seriously,” he added.<\/p>\n

In his remark, the Chairman of the Committee, immediate past Minister of
\nJustice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, said
\nimplementation of the recommendations will entrench constitutionalism,
\ndemocratic principles and separation of powers.<\/p>\n

“The recommendations clearly spell out that if uniform modules for
\nimplementation of financial autonomy for state legislature and state
\njudiciary are approved for implementation across 36 states, it will no
\ndoubt strengthen Nigeria’s democratic principles, practices and public
\ngovernance,” he said.<\/p>\n

Malami added that the committee had observed that most states honoured
\nthe constitutional provisions for financial autonomy in the breach, than
\nin observance, noting that the legislature and judiciary remain the last
\nhope of the common man and should be given autonomy.<\/p>\n

He said the committee consulted with state governors, Chief Judges of
\nstates, Speakers of State Houses of Assembly, Civil Society
\nOrganizations and relevant stakeholders, including members of the
\npublic.<\/p>\n

The Presidential Implementation Committee on Financial Autonomy of State
\nLegislature and State Judiciary was inaugurated by President Buhari on
\nMarch 22nd, 2019, to fashion out strategies and modalities for
\nimplementation of the financial autonomy of the state legislature and
\nstate judiciary in compliance with Section 121 (3) of the 1999
\nconstitution (As Amended).<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
