Rivers State Governor,\u00a0 Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has announced that the State
\nGovernment will henceforth bankroll the form fees for the Unified
\nTertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) of Joint Admissions and
\nMatriculation Board (JAMB) for all Indigenes and non-indigenes in the
\nstate.<\/p>\n
Governor Wike said\u00a0 that the gesture\u00a0 of the Rivers State Government
\nwill commence with the 2020 UTME to be conducted by JAMB.<\/p>\n
Speaking during a Courtesy Visit by the Registrar of JAMB at the
\nGovernment House Port Harcourt on Thursday,\u00a0 Governor Wike said that the
\nRivers State Government is committed\u00a0 to ensuring\u00a0 that less privileged
\nstudents are not denied\u00a0 the opportunity\u00a0 to sit for the examination.<\/p>\n
He said: “From 2020, UTME forms for Indigenes and non-indigenes will be
\npaid for by the Rivers State Government.\u00a0 It is important\u00a0 for us to
\nensure that children\u00a0 of the less privileged don’t bear\u00a0 this burden.<\/p>\n
“This offer\u00a0 is to ensure that no qualified\u00a0 candidate is denied the
\nopportunity\u00a0 to write the UTME. For some parents,\u00a0 the fee is nothing,
\nbut there are families that cannot afford the fees”.<\/p>\n
The Governor\u00a0 also announced the allocation\u00a0 of land at the Greater Port
\nHarcourt City\u00a0 to JAMB for the construction of their Zonal Office.<\/p>\n
He also allocated\u00a0 a block of offices to JAMB as their temporary office
\nin Rivers State, following\u00a0 the dilapidation\u00a0 of the current office. He
\nalso donated\u00a0 an operational vehicle\u00a0 to JAMB in the State.<\/p>\n
Registrar of JAMB,\u00a0 Professor Ishaq Oloyede commended the Rivers State
\nGovernor for his commitment to the development of education,\u00a0 especially
\nhis abolition of fees for secondary and primary schools in the state.<\/p>\n
He appealed to the Rivers State Governor to allocate a temporary\u00a0 office
\nto JAMB\u00a0 for their daily operations\u00a0 as the current office has totally
\ndegenerated.<\/p>\n
He said that in view of the number\u00a0 of candidates\u00a0 writing UTME in the
\nstate, JAMB requires land to construct\u00a0 a mega computer based\u00a0 test
\ncentre in the\u00a0 state.<\/p>\n
“There are only 12 Computer Based Test centres in Rivers State.\u00a0 This
\nnumber\u00a0 is grossly\u00a0 inadequate.\u00a0 We urge Your Excellency to allocate
\nland for JAMB\u00a0 to construct a mega computer based test Centre for at
\nleast 500 Candidates.<\/p>\n
“You are the closest\u00a0 governor\u00a0 to JAMB. Rise and help us. Funding is no
\nlonger\u00a0 our problem.\u00a0 We retain N2billion annually from our Internally
