The Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai pressured President Muhammadu
\nBuhari to arrest former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former minister
\nof defense, Theophilus Danjuma over their constant criticism of the
\nBuhari\u2019s administration, prior to the 2019 General elections,
\nPointblanknews.com has learnt.<\/p>\n

However the arrest plan was resisted by Buhari\u2019s Chief of Staff, Abba
\nKyari, who pointed out the consequences of such a move on the two elder
\nstatesmen. Former Director General of the Department of State Services
\n(DSS), Lawan Daura, also opposed the arrest move, a Villa source
\nconfided in Pointblanknews.com<\/p>\n

While the arrest and detention plan failed, it was learnt that el-Rufai
\nin connivance with the National Security Adviser (NSA) Maj Gen Babagana
\nMonguno (rtd) and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes
\nCommission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu, almost prevented Obasanjo from making a
\nforeign trip by security operatives at the airport.<\/p>\n

The source added that the resistance to the arrest by Kyari entrenched
\nhis power tussle with el-Rufai over influence on Buhari.<\/p>\n

In the buildup to the 2019 presidential election, Obasanjo and Danjuma
\nwere fierce critics of Buhari\u2019s administration. While Obasanjo in a
\nlengthy statement urged Buhari not to recontest on grounds of
\nincompetence, Danjuma had accused the military under, Buhari\u2019s watch, of
\ncolluding with killler herdsmen on ethnic agenda.<\/p>\n

El-Rufai emerged on Nigeria\u2019s national scene during Obasanjo’s
\nadministration when he served as former Director General of Bureau of
\nPublic Enterprises, the head of privatisation agency, and later as the
\nMinister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja from 2003 to 2007.<\/p>\n

He was very influential under during Obasanjo\u2019s administration and was
\nconsidered a integral member of the former president\u2019s inner cycle.<\/p>\n

However, Pointblanknews.com can report that in the heat of the
\ncriticisms against Buhari by Obasanjo and Danjuma, the Kaduna State
\nGovernor leaned on his ally, the NSA, Monguno to insist on the arrest
\nand detention of two leaders.<\/p>\n

Monguno in turn leaned on his protege, the EFCC Chairman, Magu, who
\nwrote a letter to both elder statesmen, querying them on some of their
\npast dealings.<\/p>\n

It was further learnt that \u201cObasanjo was queried on the strength of that
\nletter and was almost prevented from traveling abroad by security
\noperatives at the airport. Part of the plan was to confine Obsanjo in
\nhis house before arresting him,\u201d a source told Pointblanknews.com.<\/p>\n

The source added, \u201cWhile Buhari was seriously considering to heed to
\nel-Rufai\u2019s advice, the chief of staff, Abba Kyari, weighing on the
\nconsequence such moves portends, advised the President against arresting
\nOBJ and TY.<\/p>\n

\u201cFormer DSS DG Lawan Daura, also opposes the move. Kyari who has friends
\ncut across political divide opined that such would send a dangerous
\nsignal locally and internationally and spell doom for the Buhari\u2019s Govt.
\nEl-Rufai\u2019s suggestions was thereafter discarded,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n

It was learnt that the Kaduna Governor, after that rebuff, started
\nmounting pressure for the removal of Kyari as Buhari\u2019s Chief of Staff
\nbefore and after the general elections.<\/p>\n

The source said, \u201cel-rufai wanted the position of Chief of Staff because
\nof his 2023 Presidential ambition. He snitches to Buhari on anyone he
\ndislikes to create the impression that he is loyal to the President. The
\nChief of Staff and other close associates of Buhari have all seen
\nthrough him and are battle ready to deal with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cKyari has been the one creating balance for the Buhari\u2019s government.
\nE-lrufai is said to have been a toxic to the government. His antics if
\naccepted, would have caused Buhari\u2019s government a lot of headache,\u201d the
