Mr and Mrs Solomon Igwe, parents of a late baby girl, whose ear was
\nfound missing has allegedly accused an Anambra state\u00a0 medical doctor of
\nusing it for ritual purposes.<\/p>\n

However, police authority has exonerated the medical doctor of any
\ncomplicity in the matter.<\/p>\n

The newborn child had died at the private hospital in Onitsha, Anambra
\nState in 2015, but her parents later discovered that one of the baby’s
\near was mutilated, while also alleging that the doctor, Dr Oliver Umeh,
\nmay have used her for ritual purposes.<\/p>\n

But a police report on the matter, obtained by journalists, has
\nexonerated the medical doctor, saying the missing ear had been eaten by
\nrodents.<\/p>\n

The incident had led to mass arrest of staff of the hospital, while
\nseveral petitions had also been written to the Inspector General of
\nPolice, the Nigeria Medical Association, and even wife of the governor
\nof Anambra State, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, by the parent from Ebonyi
\nState.<\/p>\n

But the report by the office of the Inspector-General of Police stated
\nthat rats actually ate the baby’s ear at the hospital.<\/p>\n

Part of the report read, “In the course of the investigation, statements
\nof parties to the case were recorded and the scene of crime was visited.
\nDetectives also viewed the corpse of the deceased baby.<\/p>\n

“An autopsy was conducted on the remains of the deceased baby, but the
\nparents contested the outcome.<\/p>\n

“This occasioned the parents of the deceased baby to arrange for another
\npathologist, who conducted a second autopsy.<\/p>\n

“In the course of investigation, it was established that Mr Solomon Igwe
\nand his wife, Bridget, brought their five-day-old baby girl to the
\nVictory Children’s Hospital, Onitsha, as a referral case from St. Mary’s
\nHospital, Okpoko Onitsha.<\/p>\n

“It was also revealed that 45 minutes after their arrival, the baby died
\nin the presence of the parents while on admission, but the parents could
\nnot collect the corpse on that fateful day, but on arrival for the
\ncollection of the corpse the following day for burial, it was discovered
\nthat the deceased’s right ear had been severed; they alerted the
\npolice.”<\/p>\n

The report added that police investigation revealed that the parents
\ncapitalised on the discovered severed ear and became suspicious of the
\ncause of death.<\/p>\n

It further stated that both the first and second post-mortem
\nexaminations conducted on the insistence of the father of the deceased
\nbaby revealed that the ear was apparently removed by rodents, hence the
\nserrated edges of the defect left behind. Histology also shows that the
\ndefect arose after death.<\/p>\n

“Consequently, this evidently resolved the contention as to the cause of
\ndeath and the severed ear.<\/p>\n

“There is nothing of evidential value linking Dr Oliver Umeh to the
\nalleged crime in the course of investigation as no enough evidence
\nabound on the allegation linking Dr. Oliver Umeh to any crime.”<\/p>\n

It was gathered that the parents had earlier demanded N10 million from
\nthe hospital as compensation for the severed ear, but the hospital
\nmanagement rather petitioned the IGP.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
