The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has accused former president Olusegun<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Obasanjo of dividing the country along tribal and religious lines and
\nlacking the moral rights to attack the government of President Mohammadu
\nBuhari.<\/p>\n

Former President Obasanjo had recently in an open letter to President
\nBuhari raised serious concerns on issues mostly bordering on insecurity,
\namong others in the country.<\/p>\n

But reacting to Obasanjo\u2019s letter, ACF noted that while the former
\nPresident has unfettered access to President Buhari, the letter was not
\ndriven by patriotism but by self-aggrandizement<\/p>\n

ACF\u2019s statement signed by Mohammed Ibrahim Biu reads:<\/p>\n

\u201cArewa Consultative Forum (ACF) is constrained to comment on the letter
\ndated 15th July 2019 by the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo
\naddressed to President Muhammadu Buhari on issues he claimed are “very
\nweighty and must be greatly worrisome to all concerned Nigerians” hence
\nthe reason he made it open.<\/p>\n

\u201cACF appreciates the freedom of expression and the right to hold opinion
\non all issues as guaranteed in our constitution by individuals or
\ngroups, as long as it’s within the confines of the law.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Forum therefore believed that Chief Obasanjo used this privilege to
\nraised the issues which mostly borders on insecurity in his latest
\nletter, it must however be noted that the issues are not new to
\nNigerians as he had raised them in his previous open letters to the
\nPresident, so also other Nigerians in different fora.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the same, in exercising our right to comment on the letter, it is
\nour candid opinion that Chief Obasanjo being a former President and an
\nelder statesman who has unfettered access to the President should use a
\nbetter and most civilized way of communicating his views to a sitting
\npresident rather than going public to create unnecessary scene and try
\nto bring down the roof. It is true that Chief Obasanjo has become
\nrelentless in his self-appointed task of a Cassandra-in- chief for
\nNigeria, always proclaiming doomsday, predicting upheaval and bloodbath,
\nwhich to say the least has diminished his acclaimed status as a patriot
\nand nationalist.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs far as the ACF and indeed the North is concerned, Chief Obasanjo
\nlacks the moral standing to make any damning statements against any
\ngovernment considering his antecedents while at the helm of affairs as
\nPresident. His statements and comments on national issues are neither
\ndriven by altruism nor by patriotism, but sheer self-aggrandizement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat, we must ask, motivates Chief Obasanjo’s current divisive
\nactivities? His recent outburst on ‘Islamization’, Fulanization’, and
\n‘Northernization’ are clearly calculated at causing division and
\nacrimony along religious, ethnic and regional lines which is most
\nunfortunate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe former President knows more than any other Nigerian that there is
\nno such thing as Islamization or Fulanization in the North’s agenda.
\nEnemies of the North chose to propagate such negative narratives only
\nwith the view to causing disharmony among undiscerning Nigerians.
\nUnfortunately, many, including the highly educated and politically
\nsophisticated elites have unwittingly fallen into the trap of believing
\nin Obasanjo and his ilk.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Forum notes with sadness how the negative stereotype associated
\nwith the issue of “Fulani herdsmen” is gradually degenerating into a
\nnational crisis. We find the assertion that every crime committed in,
\nespecially the southern part of the country, as being committed by
\nFulani herdsmen, irresponsible and deliberately aimed at achieving some
\ncertain diabolical objectives.<\/p>\n

“The narration that every criminal, armed robbers and kidnappers are
\nFulani herdsmen because a Fulani man is at helm of affairs is a
\ndangerous precedent which has to stop. Criminals must be regarded as
\ncriminals without giving them any ethnic, religious or regional
\ncoloration.<\/p>\n

\u201cACF therefore calls on groups and individuals who engage in such
\nnarratives to rise above such pettiness.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must realize that insurgency, banditry, kidnappings and armed
\nrobbery are our common enemies. We must join hands in finding a lasting
\nsolution to the menace.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no gain saying the fact that the country is currently facing
\ndire security challenges with its consequences, however, we must quickly
\nadd that the challenges are as a result of cumulative failures of past
\nadministrations.<\/p>\n

\u201cACF notes the efforts of military, police and other security agencies
\nin curtailing the menace of insecurity, however, it urges the government
\nto be more decisive in dealing with these security challenges, more so
\nthat unpatriotic forces are taking advantage of the situation to forge
\nahead their evil agenda of destabilizing the country. The president,
\nmore than ever before, should rejig the nation’s security apparatus for
\neffective performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cFurthermore, the Forum appeals to the Federal Government to employ both
\nsecurity and political solutions to the various challenges facing the
\nnation.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally, ACF wishes to reiterate its belief in the unity and
\ninvisibility of Nigeria. Our diversity in cultures, religions and tribes
\nshould be positively harnessed for the common good of all.\u201d<\/p>\n
