{"id":68055,"date":"2019-08-01T15:30:28","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T14:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=68055"},"modified":"2019-08-01T15:30:28","modified_gmt":"2019-08-01T14:30:28","slug":"court-jails-school-proprietress-for-obtaining-n5m-by-trick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/other-news\/court-jails-school-proprietress-for-obtaining-n5m-by-trick\/","title":{"rendered":"Court Jails School Proprietress for Obtaining N5m by Trick"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\":tz\" class=\"ii gt\">\n<div id=\":ta\" class=\"a3s aXjCH \">The Maiduguri Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes<br \/>\nCommission, EFCC, has secured the conviction and sentencing of Josephine<br \/>\nUdeh, before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court,<br \/>\nsitting in Maiduguri on a one-count charge of obtaining money by false<br \/>\npretence to the tune of N5, 059,000.<\/p>\n<p>Udeh, who was the Proprietress of Dala Standard Secondary School,<br \/>\nMaiduguri, collected the said sum as WAEC registration fees from 284<br \/>\nstudents of her school and converted it to her private use.<\/p>\n<p>She pleaded not guilty upon her arraignment on Wednesday, April 24,<br \/>\n2019.<\/p>\n<p>In the course of the trial, the prosecution presented 10 witnesses and<br \/>\n10 exhibits which pushed her to enter into a plea bargain agreement with<br \/>\nthe EFCC.<\/p>\n<p>At the resumed hearing, today, Wednesday, July 31, 2019, prosecution<br \/>\ncounsel Benjamin Manji prayed the court to substitute an earlier charge<br \/>\nfiled on the April 9, 2019 with an amended charge of the day, July 31,<br \/>\n2019.<\/p>\n<p>The amended charge reads: &#8220;That you, Josephine Udeh being the director<br \/>\nof Dala Standard Secondary School, Maiduguri, sometime between 2017 and<br \/>\n2018 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this<br \/>\nhonourable court, did dishonestly misappropriate the sum of N5,059,000<br \/>\n(Five Million and Fifty-nine Thousand Naira) only, being monies meant<br \/>\nfor 2017\/2018 WAEC registration fees for 284 students of the said Dala<br \/>\nStandard Secondary School, Maiduguri and thereby committed an offence<br \/>\ncontrary to Section 308 of the Penal Code Law cap 102 Laws of Borno<br \/>\nState of Nigeria and Punishable under Section 309 of the same Law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She pleaded guilty to the amended charge in line with the plea bargain<br \/>\nagreement she opted for.<\/p>\n<p>Following her guilty plea, the prosecution counsel prayed the court to<br \/>\nconvict her as charged.<\/p>\n<p>However, the defence counsel, B.G Sanda prayed for leniency and urged<br \/>\nthe court to temper justice with mercy as the defendant has already<br \/>\nrepayed the misappropriated sum.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, Justice Kumaliya pronounced her guilty as charged with a<br \/>\nfine of N150, 000 (One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) and to spend<br \/>\none year in prison custody in default of the payment of the fine.<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"yj6qo\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yj6qo\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yj6qo\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\":pw\" class=\"hq gt a10\"><\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Maiduguri Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has secured the conviction and sentencing of Josephine Udeh, before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":68056,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-68055","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-other-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
