The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes commission,<\/div>\n

EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, has appealed to the British Government to help
\nNigeria achieve the repatriation of the country’s stolen money stashed
\naway in banks in United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

Magu made the appeal while receiving a delegation from British’s Serious
\nand Organised Crime Joint Analysis, SOCJA for West Africa at EFCC’s
\nheadquarters.<\/p>\n

He noted that it was worrisome that the wealth of the country has for a
\nvery long time, remained trapped in foreign countries, hindering
\ninfrastructural development of Nigeria and creating paucity of funds to
\nrun the country. Nigeria, he said, would have been better if the stolen
\nmonies have been returned.<\/p>\n

“Our worry is that our money has been held for a very long time in
\nforeign countries and if our money is returned, there will be improved
\ninfrastructural development in many sectors of the economy. If all the
\nrepatriated funds are pumped into the country, it will significantly
\nenhance our abilities and capabilities,” Magu said.<\/p>\n

He frowned at the rate at which illicit funds are being moved away to
\nBritain and other European countries, disclosing that the EFCC has
\ncarried out a lot of activities in local and foreign airports in trying
\nto stop and apprehend looters exiting or entering the country with
\nillicit funds.<\/p>\n

He further disclosed that some unscrupulous elements were smuggling out
\nraw gold, especially from Zamfara State to foreign countries, by
\nlaundering it into money outside the shores of the country and in the
\nprocess denying the country of the precious natural endowment that would
\nhave been processed locally and value gained from it.<\/p>\n

Magu noted that Nigeria, especially the EFCC, has a good working
\nrelationship with the British Government, and has also received lots of
\nsupport from the UK Government.<\/p>\n

The leader of the SOCJA delegation from the UK’s National Crime Agency,
\nPaddy Kerr, disclosed that the visit to the EFCC, followed the
\ninstruction from the British Government that each team under the Serious
\nOrganized Crime Joint Analysts, SOCJA, should go to every region in the
\nworld and try to get the picture of its peculiar organized crimes.<\/p>\n

“We need to understand from the EFCC’s perspective, what is driving
\ncrimes and corruption in Nigeria. What are the key things EFCC is doing
\nthat British can assist?” Kerr asked.<\/p>\n

Aside Nigeria in West Africa, the assignment he said, will take the team
\nto Ghana, Guinea and Senegal, in order to identify the threats and
\nchallenges, facing the countries of this region from organised crimes.<\/p>\n

Speaking further, he said: “Our job is not to be the experts, but to try
\nto understand what are the underlying causes and driving forces of
\nserious organised crimes, so that we can have better programmes in the
\nfuture and better direct our resources.”<\/p>\n

He disclosed that they were looking at areas of illicit financial flows,
\nbribery, embezzlement and contract negotiation, adding that “we are
\nlooking at collaboration that will enhance EFCC’s abilities,
\nintelligence gathering and sharing.”<\/p>\n

He called for synergy between the EFCC and SOCJA, noting that “criminals
\nare constantly thinking of new ways to get away with their criminal
\nactivities.”<\/p>\n

Kerr stated that the Nigerian government needed political will to win
\nthe fight against corruption and praised President Muhammadu Buhari for
\nthe renewed momentum in Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight.<\/p>\n

Other members of the delegation are Jim Connelly Webster and Kathryn
