Nigerians woke up on Saturday to the arrest of Sowore, who was taken in<\/div>\n
\n
a Gestapo manner by operatives of the Department of State Services.<\/p>\n

The arrest of Omoyele Sowore by DSS has led to a social uproar in
\nNigeria.<\/p>\n

His arrest is not unconnected to his championing of #RevolutionNow
\nprotest in demand of good governance from the Muhammadu Buhari-led
\nadministration.<\/p>\n

High profile individuals, as well as civil societies and
\nnon-governmental organizations, are calling for his immediate release
\nadding that the constitution of Nigeria permits the right to protest of
\nall Nigerians.<\/p>\n

A CSO, Enough is Enough (EiE) Nigeria, coalition of young Nigerians
\npromoting good governance and citizen engagement, also joined the demand
\nfor Sowore\u2019s release.<\/p>\n

The CSO also express their demand on Twitter.<\/p>\n

EiE said, \u201cThe arrest & detention of @YeleSowore by DSS belies Nigeria’s
\nsupposed commitment to human rights. The protest is a human right!
\n#RevolutionNow #DaysOfRage<\/p>\n

\u201cThis stifling of citizens’ voices is blatant lawlessness & an abuse.<\/p>\n

The DSS itself being a creation of the law cannot act above the law that
\ncreated it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe battle for the right of lawful assembly of citizens in any cause,
\nconducted peacefully has been won legally, constitutionally, and even
\nmorally.\u201d<\/p>\n

The People\u2019s Alternative Front also posited that Sowore has not
\ncommitted any criminal offence by associating with other Nigerians to
\nhold a peaceful rally.<\/p>\n

PAF in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Eze Alloysius read,
\n\u201cSince Nigerians have the fundamental right to protest for and against
\nany of the governments in the country Mr. Sowore has not committed any
\ncriminal offence by associating with other Nigerians to hold a peaceful
\nrally against insecurity, unemployment, corruption, etc.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter all, General Buhari had taken part in public protests against the
\nrigging of the 2003 general election by the Olusegun administration and
\nagainst insecurity in the country in 2014 under the Goodluck Jonathan
\nadministration.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, in demanding for the unconditional release of Mr. Sowore
\nfrom illegal custody without any further delay we are compelled to urge
\nPresident Buhari to call the heads of the security agencies to order.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) Lagos State Branch
\nalso called for the immediate and unconditional release of Sowore adding
\nthat if his arrest is because of the planned protest, the government
\nshould have waited for wait till the day of the protest.<\/p>\n

CDHR stated that a similar revolution by Nigerians led to the emergence
\nof Muhammadu Buhari as president in 2015.<\/p>\n

Comrade Alex Omotehinse, State Chairman of CDHR said, \u201cWe must remind
\nthis Buhari Government that the 1999 constitution of the federal
\nrepublic of Nigeria as amended gives Sowore or any other Nigerian right
\nto protest and freedom of expression with the right to lawful assembly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to remind Mr. Buhari what brought him to office maybe he must
\nhave forgotten so quickly that it was PEOPLES REVOLUTION from 2014 to
\n2015\u00a0 that leads to his emergence as the president of Nigeria.<\/p>\n

During the last administration led by his Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele
\nJonathan Nigerians protested against his government day and night but
\nJonathan never prevented nor arrested anybody for protesting against his
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n

The President must be called to order by the National Assembly and he
\nmust know that this is a democratic government, not the military
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n

This government has failed Nigerians, therefore, it deserves to be
\ncondemned, since returned to civil rule in 1999 Buhari regime has
\nrecorded the highest arrest of critics. Buhari government has failed in
\nall ramifications, security of life and property is zero, we can no
\nlonger travel safely on our roads, killings everywhere and kidnapping in
\nhigh rate Boko Haram insurgence are still killing our soldiers and
\ninnocent Nigerians in north and herdsmen are killing villagers\u00a0 Buhari
\nand his DSS did not deem it fit to address that, but they are most
\nconcern about innocent citizen that are complaining.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
