ASSOCIATION\u00a0 OF\u00a0 NIGERIA ( HURIWA) has condemned as unconstitutional and
\nillegal the ARREST of the opposition politician and the publisher of the
\nfamous online platform- Saharareporters.com Mr. Omoyele SOWORE by the
\nDepartment of State Services (DSS) just as the Rights group has called
\nfor his immediate freedom.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 Rights group said the ARREST of SOWORE is a culmination of the
\nsystematic CLAMPDOWN and organised brutish\u00a0 attacks targeting persons
\nand groups with divergent opinion from the status quo\u00a0 just as HURIWA
\nrestated her alarm that the current administration\u00a0 has embarked on the
\nSHRINKING and deliberate stiffling of the CIVIC SPACES. HURIWA accused
\nthe DSS of illegally bugging telephones of prominent civil rights
\nleaders including leaders of HURIWA. .<\/p>\n

The group which submitted that the fundamentals of the practice of
\nconstitutional democracy are animated by the protection and promotion of
\nthe basic constitutional freedoms of speech and the opening of the civic
\nspaces, has raised alarm that since coming to office, President
\nMuhammadu Buhari has adopted anti-democratic postures that constitute
\ngrave threats to constitutional democracy.<\/p>\n

\ufffcAccording to HURIWA : “it is an undeniable fact that civic space is the
\nbedrock and the fundamental of any open and democratic government which
\nis guaranteed under the chapter four of the Nigerian constitution of
\n1999 (as amended); all other global human rights conventions and laws do
\nalso support the fundamental freedoms as espoused in chapter 4 of the
\nconstitution. May we remind president Buhari that his attacks against
\nthose fundamental freedoms constitute grave threats to democracy because
\nwhen civic space is open, citizenry and civic society platforms are then
\nable to organize, participate and communicate without hindrance or
\nimpediments that the open threats to lives and freedoms of the
\npractitioners have now become. This can only be the case if government
\nis compelled to discharge her obligations to the citizenry. The freedoms
\nof association; peaceful assembly and expression are no doubt the
\nstrategic elements of an open civic space. These critical elements are
\nsystematically put under attacks by the President Muhammadu Buhari’s
\nadministration and un fortunately the free World is watching as
\nconstitutional democracy is about to collapse in Nigeria”.<\/p>\n

HURIWA stated that the report that the presidential candidate African
\nAction Congress (AAC) Omoyele Sowore was\u00a0 arrested by Operatives of the
\nDepartment of State Services to thwart the holding of nationwide
\nprotests against misgovernance and unprecedented insecurity shows that
\nthe current administration lacks the frame of mind to tolerate
\ndissenting voices. “Does anyone in this government benefit from these
\nkillings by all kinds of armed freelance killers and bandits so much so
\nthat the government is afraid of street protests to condemn these
\nkillings?”<\/p>\n

HURIWA described the arrest of Omoyele Sowore Soworethe leading human
\nrights activist in Lagos,\u00a0 pro-democracy campaigner, founder of online
\nnews agency Sahara Reporters who was arrested Saturday morning at his
\nhome as clandestine and primitive has also demanded his immediate
\nrelease and public apology by President Muhammadu\u00a0 Buhari.<\/p>\n

According to the Rights group: “Why invade the residence of a citizen in
\nthe wee hours of the morning like thieves or kidnappers to whisk away a
\ncitizen? This is reminiscent\u00a0 of the dictatorial style if the diabolical
\nmilitary dictatorship of General Sani Abacha which is totally not in
\nconsonance\u00a0 with the principle\u00a0 and practice of constitutional
\ndemocracy”.<\/p>\n

HURIWA\u00a0 emphatically accused the DSs of seeking to destroy free speech
\nbecause the act was made to frustrate the plan to stage series of
\nplanned\u00a0 civil protests just as the Rights group said this may be as a
\nresult of his (OMOWOLE SOWORE’S)\u00a0 plans to mobilise people in Lagos and
\nmany parts of the country for a revolution protest tagged ‘ Days of
\nRage’ to demand a better Nigeria.<\/p>\n

HURIWA observed too that since Sowore tweeted: ” DSS invades Sowore’s”
\nand was subsequently not allowed to speak to his lawyer shows that the
\nDSS is yet to come to terms with the fact that Nigeria has for 20 years
\npracticed constitutional democracy with inbuilt provisions in chapter 4
\nfor the protection of the fundamental freedoms of the citizenry
\nincluding the right to a legal representation and a right to the dignity
\nof his personhood as recognised by international and local human rights
\nlaws.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
