As a form of modern slavery, human<br \/>\ntrafficking thrives on illegal trading, exploitation, misuse and abuse<br \/>\nof humans for horrendous commercial gains and crimes, apparently,<br \/>\nwithout the victim\u2019s consent.<\/p>\n<p>The modern slavery industry is estimated to generate over $150billion<br \/>\nannually, an equivalent of Nigeria\u2019s budget for five years. Over 40<br \/>\nmillion people are a victim of modern slavery worldwide, according to<br \/>\nthe Global Slavery Index Report, which ranks Nigeria 32\/167 of the<br \/>\ncountries with the highest number of slaves \u2013 1,386,000. Woman and<br \/>\nchildren make up more than 70 per cent of this demographic.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria is at the epicentre of human trafficking and migration crisis.<br \/>\nIn the past five years, Nigeria has been highlighted as a source,<br \/>\ntransit and destination country for human trafficking. It might be<br \/>\ninteresting to state that 75 per cent of trafficked cases in Nigeria is<br \/>\ndone inter-state, while 23 per cent are intra-state and only two per<br \/>\ncent is trafficked out of the country, this is corroborated by the<br \/>\nNational Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).<\/p>\n<p>Across the states and streets of Nigeria, cases of human trafficking<br \/>\nabound either in the form of commercial sex, forced labour, begging,<br \/>\nforced marriage, organ harvesting, ritual practices, etc. Think of that<br \/>\nyoung boy or girl in the custody of a madam who sells him out to the<br \/>\nhighest bidder or the young lady who is prostituted by a madam.<\/p>\n<p>The irregular migration portfolio of Nigeria has bloated. It was<br \/>\nreported that 602,000 Nigerians migrated to Europe in 2016 through the<br \/>\ndesert and Mediterranean of which 27,000 died. Interestingly, Nigeria is<br \/>\nalso at the receiving end of the global migration crisis. Ongoing<br \/>\nsecurity challenges in the country have revealed the army of<br \/>\nundocumented immigrants who have come to found solace in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Victims of trafficking often become irregular migrants as they are<br \/>\nillegally taken to different parts of the world with their identity,<br \/>\ndocuments and passports taken from them by their traffickers, hereby<br \/>\ncontributing to the local and global burden of migration. These people<br \/>\nsuffer gross misuse and abuse, trauma, unknown and unfriendly terrain,<br \/>\ninhuman treatments, misuse and abuse, and social rejection and disdain.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the push and pull factors of illegal migration and human<br \/>\ntrafficking, it is pertinent that all stakeholders, starting with the<br \/>\nfamily unit and government take proactive measures to educate, enlighten<br \/>\nand empower their wards and citizens respectively against this social<br \/>\nmisnomer. Winning the war against trafficking and illegal starts with<br \/>\nstopping it from happening, primarily, through reorientation and<br \/>\neconomic empowerment.<\/p>\n<p>Ignorance remains a needful rewarding factor for traffickers. They are<br \/>\nalways in search of young minds and their family members who are unaware<br \/>\nof the realities and risks of being trafficked. Traffickers paint a<br \/>\npicture of paradise to their unsuspecting victims, only to swing the<br \/>\ndeal in the course of the journey. In checking human trafficking,<br \/>\ntherefore, public enlightenment must be increased through trusted<br \/>\nsources \u2013 parents, religious and commercial centres, media, et al. More<br \/>\npeople need to be aware of the workings of traffickers. Only an informed<br \/>\nmind can make informed decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Empowerment, engagement and employment are also essential to stemming<br \/>\nthe tide of trafficking and illegal migration in Nigeria.\u00a0 When young<br \/>\npeople are incapacitated to make viable economic decisions and live<br \/>\ncomfortably, they are vulnerable to trafficking, smuggling and migrating<br \/>\ndangerously. Government and its institutions, private and international<br \/>\nagencies must be forthright in advancing empowerment and employment<br \/>\ncapacities in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>While the prosecution of traffickers and smugglers has been improving in<br \/>\nNigeria, there is a need to do more through the relevant agencies. High<br \/>\nprofile prosecutions must be accomplished as this will send a strong<br \/>\nsignal to intending and existing perpetrators of this 21st-century crime<br \/>\nagainst humanity.<br \/>\nPolicymakers need to review existing legal frameworks on human rights<br \/>\nabuses as such is trafficking. These laws should provide protection<br \/>\nmeasures for trafficked persons, ease of repatriation for illegal<br \/>\nmigrants and active prosecution for offenders.<\/p>\n<p>As a powerhouse for the African continent and emerging global<br \/>\ndevelopment, Nigeria has so much to lose if appropriate measures are not<br \/>\ndecisively taken on curbing the trend of human trafficking and illegal<br \/>\nmigration. Think of the loses \u2013 lives, manpower, money, investments,<br \/>\nrelationships, reputation and the future.
