\nA coalition of former 2019 presidential aspirants and candidates, under
\nthe aegis of Third Force Forum, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to
\nimmediately order the Department of State Services to release Omoyele
\nSowore.<\/p>\n

Sowore was abducted on Saturday by operatives of the DSS for organizing
\na protest, RevolutionNow, against bad governance in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

The former presidential aspirants and candidates described the arrest of
\nSowore as unlawful, positing that he acted within his rights as
\nenshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.<\/p>\n

In a letter to Buhari, the Third Force Forum also urged the president to
\nrespect human rights and adhere to international treaties the country
\nsubscribed to.<\/p>\n

The group said, \u201cWe must also remind you, Mr. President, that in
\naddition to the Nigerian Constitution, Nigeria also subscribes to other
\ninternational treaties, which prohibit violation of human rights of its
\ncitizens.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo refrain from adhering to these national and international rights is
\nto invite anarchy onto the Federal Republic of Nigeria.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs you are fully aware, Mr. President, every democratic government that
\nsubscribes to the rule of law, has time-tested methods of containing any
\nbreach of the peace during peaceful protests; without clamping down on
\nour fundamental rights of ‘Freedom of Expression’ and to peaceably
\nassemble, in order to address grievances by the government; even when
\nthose views expressed are contrary to the views of the current
\ngovernment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The forum stated further: \u201cWe implore you to immediately order the
\napplicable agencies of the state to immediately release Mr. Omoyele
\nSowore unconditionally, in order to maintain peace in our country, and
\nto deter further national and international repercussions on this
\nmatter.\u201d<\/p>\n

The letter to the president was signed by five presidential aspirants
\nand two presidential candidates at the last general election.<\/p>\n

They are Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, 2019 presidential aspirant, All Progressives
\nCongress (APC); Hon. Tope Fasua, 2019 presidential candidate, Abundant
\nNigeria Renewal Party (ANRP); Hon. Okey Samuel Mbonu, 2019 presidential
\naspirant, Labour Party (LP); Dr. Thomas-Wilson Ikhubese, 2019
\npresidential aspirant, Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN); Dr. Emmanuel
\nEtim, 2019 presidential candidate, Change Nigeria Party (CNP); Dr.
\nAyodele O. Favour, 2019 presidential aspirant, Young Progressives Party
\n(YPP); and Hon. Clement Jimbo, 2019 presidential aspirant, Social
\nDemocratic Party (SDP).<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
