{"id":68581,"date":"2019-08-20T19:47:21","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T18:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=68581"},"modified":"2019-08-20T19:47:21","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T18:47:21","slug":"revolutionnow-court-summons-dss-police-over-sowores-continuous-detention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/revolutionnow-court-summons-dss-police-over-sowores-continuous-detention\/","title":{"rendered":"#REVOLUTIONNOW: Court Summons DSS, Police Over Sowore&#8217;s Continuous Detention"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m-7452221943442228495\" class=\"mail-message \">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\">The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has ordered the Department of<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"m-6949235698437571862\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">State Services and the Inspector-General of Police to appear before it<br \/>\non September 4 over the detention pro-democracy activist and co-convener<br \/>\nof #RevolutionNowmovement, Omoyele Sowore.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Nicholas Oweibo gave the order on Tuesday following an ex-parte<br \/>\napplication filed by Olukoya Ogungbeje, a Lagos-based lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Sowore was arrested by operatives of the DSS in Lagos on August 3 over<br \/>\nthe planned RevolutionNow protest slated for August 5.<\/p>\n<p>He has remained in DSS detention since that day.<\/p>\n<p>Ogungbeje, who said he also participated in the #RevolutionNowprotest<br \/>\nbut was not arrested, urged the court to declare as unconstitutional and<br \/>\nillegal police clampdown of the protesters and the arrest of Sowore by<br \/>\nthe DSS.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the court to make an order for the immediate and unconditional<br \/>\nrelease of those arrested and detained.<\/p>\n<p>Joined as respondents in the application are the Federal Government, the<br \/>\nDSS and the Inspector-General of Police.<\/p>\n<p>Giving reasons why the arrested persons should be immediately and<br \/>\nunconditionally released, Ogungbeje said, \u201cThere has been a grave<br \/>\nconstitutional infraction committed by the respondents against the<br \/>\napplicant and other persons who engaged in the peaceful protest for good<br \/>\ngovernance in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn August 3, 2019, convener of the protest, Omoyele Sowore was<br \/>\narrested, whisked away and detained in the detention facility of the 2nd<br \/>\nrespondent (DSS).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr Omoyele Sowore has not committed any offence known to law to warrant<br \/>\nthe infringement and likely infringement of rights by the respondents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy engaging in the peaceful protest, the applicant and other persons<br \/>\nhave not committed any offence known to law to warrant the treatment<br \/>\nmeted out to them by the respondents and their agents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But rather than order the release of the detainees, Justice Oweibo said<br \/>\nhe needed to hear from the FG, DSS and the IG.<\/p>\n<p>He ordered Ogungbeje to put them on notice and directed that the<br \/>\nrespondents must appear before him on September 4 to show cause why<br \/>\nSowore and others should not be released immediately.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"conversation-footer\" class=\"spacer\"><\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has ordered the Department of State Services and the Inspector-General of Police to appear before it on September 4 over the detention pro-democracy&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":68271,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-68581","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
