Piqued by frequent and compulsory prayers in Anambra markets, state<\/div>\n

government says if not control it will drive businesses to other states.<\/p>\n

Mr C. Don Adinuba, Commissioner for Information & Public Enlightenment
\nmade this known in a statement in Awka, the state capital on Monday.<\/p>\n

He said “to close down markets three times every week for several hours
\non each occasion in order to force every trader to pray at the same time
\nwill rob the state of its competitive edge in business.”<\/p>\n

The commissioner affirmed that each market will decide on the day and
\ntime to shut down and hold its own prayers to thank God for His
\nprotection, guidance and blessings<\/p>\n

“In the last few months, however, the regular collective and compulsory
\nprayers have been a source of controversy because of the frequency and
\nduration.<\/p>\n

“Until recently, markets were compulsorily closed every Monday,
\nWednesday and Friday from morning till afternoon to enable traders to
\npray for success.<\/p>\n

“A good number of traders have been complaining that the closures were
\ntoo frequent, all the more so since many of them attend morning devotion
\ndaily, say such prayers as The Angelus at midday and Divine Mercy at 3
\npm, also daily.<\/p>\n

“They have also been complaining that the constant market closures were
\ndepriving them of the opportunity to buy and sell, forcing customers
\nfrom Imo, Abia, the two Congos, Cameroon, Chad, Niger Republic, Central
\nAfrican Republic, Kano, Enugu, Sokoto, Ebonyi, Kogi and elsewhere to go
\nto markets in neighbouring states like Delta.<\/p>\n

“What is more, the traders accuse a certain religious preacher of being
\nthe brain behind the incessant closures for purely private gain.<\/p>\n

“They are of the view that he has created a culture of fear and has been
\nspreading superstition and rancor in the markets by brainwashing traders
\ninto believing that he is responsible for every business breakthrough
\nwhile ascribing every failure to the spiritual wickedness and
\nmanipulation of family members and fellow traders.<\/p>\n

“In the process, according to the traders, the preacher has been making
\na fortune at their expense,” Adinuba said.<\/p>\n

According to him, whatever may be the degree of frustration which the
\ntraders feel about the incessant market closures and their possible
\nmanipulation by a self-serving preacher, the Anambra State government
\nadvises all those in the markets in the state to remain spiritual
\nbecause their spirituality benefits the state.<\/p>\n

“Its significant contribution to Anambra’s emergence as the safest and
\nmost peaceful and united state in the whole country.<\/p>\n

What may not be acceptable is the frequency of the collective and
\ncompulsory prayer session.<\/p>\n

“To close down markets three times every week for several hours on each
\noccasion in order to force every trader to pray at the same time will
\nrob the state of its competitive edge in business.<\/p>\n

“It will drive businesses to other places,”\u00a0 he said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, individuals and groups will continue with their daily prayers
\nlike Morning Devotion, The Angelus and Divine Mercy.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
