Mkpu-Nando in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra state has
\nfallen apart following the youths protest against their monarch, Igwe
\nAlex Edozieuno, over the alleged misappropriation of N150m land proceeds
\ntwo days after government also ban their Iwa Ji (yam) festival.<\/p>\n
The proposed Iwa Ji festival and conferment of Chieftaincy titles to
\nsome individuals by Mkpu Nando community, Aguleri\u00a0 on Aug. 26 and Aug.
\n27 was cancelled by the state government.<\/p>\n
According to a release signed by commissioner for local government,
\nChief Greg Obi, the cancellation was due to security concerns and fears
\nabout public safety.<\/p>\n
It therefore urged all concerned stakeholders including law enforcement
\nagencies to take note of the important directive from the state
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
Youths of Mkpu-Nando in the Anambra East Local Government Area of
\nAnambra State, on Tuesday, staged a protest against their monarch, Igwe
\nAlex Edozieuno, over the alleged misappropriation of N150m land proceeds
\nbelonging to the community.<\/p>\n
Displaying placards with various inscriptions, the youths and women on
\nTuesday during a protest asked the monarch to produce the missing money
\nto avoid further rage.<\/p>\n
Some of the inscriptions on the placards read, ‘He must refund our
\nmoney’, ‘We don’t need this kind of monarch again’, ‘This Igwe should be
\narrested and prosecuted’, ‘Governor Willie Obiano come and rescue’.<\/p>\n
They marched on the Ama Umuawulu village square and other roads in the
\ncommunity, including the frontage of the monarch’s palace singing
\nuncomplimentary songs about the Igwe.<\/p>\n
Security operatives, however, prevented the crowd of about 400 persons,
\nfrom entering the monarch’s compound.<\/p>\n
The leader of the protesters, Ifeanyi Iloakasia, a lawyer, said the
\nstate government should order the monarch to refund the money to the
\ncommunity.<\/p>\n
He said the N150m was the compensation the state government paid to the
\ncommunity for its acquired land.<\/p>\n
Iloakasia stated, “If the government fails to intervene and retrieve the
\nmoney from Igwe, we will not have any option but to resort to self-help.<\/p>\n
“The monarch and the estate valuer are in an unholy alliance to rip off
\nthe Mkpunando community and we will not allow this to happen in our
\nplace.<\/p>\n
“The total money paid to the community by the government was N150m,
\nwhile the commission was N15m for the facilitators and till date, we
\nhave not received anything from the Igwe.”<\/p>\n

Reacting Igwe Edozieuno described the protesters as liars, adding that
\nhe did not owe anybody or group.<\/p>\n
He said the main issue for the protesters’ action was not the money, but
\nbecause he defeated the family of the initiators during the kingship
\ncontest.<\/p>\n
“Since then, some of them have refused to give up.<\/p>\n
“They know that I am a rich man that I have no reason to touch their
\nmoney. I made money when I was 20 years old and bought my first car at
\nthat age also.<\/p>\n
