Mitchell Elegbe, GMD \/ Founder, Interswitch Group, has said that one way
\nto fight corruption is to have the mindset of equity. He stated that
\ncorruption and poverty go hand-in-hand.<\/p>\n
Elegbe made this remark at the second edition of the InterswitchSPAK
\nMasterclass which held on Monday, August 19, 2019 in Lagos. Speaking on
\nthe topic: ‘Can I trust you?\u2019 Elegbe explained the relationship between
\nequality and equity, noting that we do not all have equal strengths,
\nopportunities and privileges. However, with a sense of equity, the more
\nprivileged would share with the less privileged.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cWhile it is wrong for the less privileged to demand equity as
\na right – as that is extortion – it is important that the privileged
\nhave a mindset of equity, that allows them to share from their
\nabundance. It is with this mindset of equity that prosperous communities
\nare built and the fight against corruption is won\u201d.<\/p>\n
He also added that to become successful in life, one has to be
\ntrustworthy. He explained that being trusted goes hand-in-hand with
\ntrustworthiness, adding that trustworthiness was a culmination of
\nability, integrity and benevolence.<\/p>\n
The Masterclass is part of the InterswitchSPAK Switch-a-Future project,
\na CSR initiative of the company focused on driving increased interest in
\nthe study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
\nsubjects among Senior Secondary School students across Africa.<\/p>\n
Participants at the Masterclass were made up of the top 81 students out
\nof the over 13,322 students from various private and public secondary
\nschools across the 36 states of the federation, including the FCT, who
\nwrote the National Qualifying Examinations in April.<\/p>\n
Other speakers at the Masterclass were Dr. Ola Orekunrin-Brown, MD \/
\nFounder, Flying Doctors Nigeria, who spoke on the topic:
\n‘Entrepreneurship \u2013 Creating Sustainable Impact by Solving Social
\nProblems’. Dr. Brown shared the story of how she started Flying Doctors
\nand the challenges she surmounted. She reiterated the need for basic
\nfinancial literacy for budding entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n
Dr. Jumoke Oduwole,\u00a0 Senior Special Assistant to the President on
\nIndustry, Trade, and Investment who was represented by Ayokunnu Ojeniyi,
\nProject Manager, Enabling Business Environment Secretariat, Office of
\nthe Vice-President, spoke on the topic: ‘Collaborative Approach to
\nSocial Innovation’ and why it was important to think creatively and
\ncritically in addressing social problems.<\/p>\n
In her welcome address, Enyioma Anaba, Group Head, Corporate Segment,
\nCorporate Marketing, at Interswitch, said that the Masterclass was an
\nintegral part of the InterswitchSPAK project because the sessions were
\ndesigned to inspire the young people to contribute to solving Africa\u2019s
\nmany problems.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cWe brought together these 81 brilliant young minds to draw
\nfrom the experiences and insights of accomplished thought leaders,
\nthinkers and professionals who are leading lights in their respective
\nspheres of influence and who are practical advocates of innovation, as a
\nplatform for social and economic development. We hope that the
\ninteractions during the sessions will provide them with the right mental
\nand emotional foundations upon which to build their character for the
\nlong haul.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Masterclass was a full-day of knowledge sharing and engagement
\nsession and had these inspiring and successful men and women in our
\nsociety sharing their experiences across school, work and family life.
\nThe participants included the 81 finalists aged between 14 and 17 years,
\nstudents from Slum2School Innovation lab, staff of Interswitch and the
\nmedia.<\/p>\n
Cherry Eromosele, Group Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at
\nInterswitch, disclosed that as a progressive organisation, Interswitch
\nhas the interest of the young African talents at heart.
\nShe said: \u201cFor Africa\u2019s youth to succeed in today\u2019s knowledge-based
\neconomy, they need to acquire the right skill sets; their minds need to
\nbe re-engineered and reconciled with STEM education as well as
\nintroduced to other softer skills which are not readily taught in the
\nclassrooms. At Interswitch, we are creating a platform that allows them
\nto not only compete within a job market that is globalized, but to
\nbecome catalysts for the creation of job markets in themselves\u201d.<\/p>\n
In furtherance of the commitment to the pan-African spread of the
\ninitiative, the InterswitchSPAK Switch-a-Future project was launched in
\nKenya and the inaugural Masterclass for the finalists held in Nairobi on
\nAugust 2, 2019.<\/p>\n
