The timely intervention of security operatives in the early hours of
\nWednesday saved attempt by irate youths to attack\u00a0 Shoprite in Onitsha,
\nthe commercial hub of Anambra state.<\/p>\n
Shoprite, a multinational trading company with South Africa interest in
\nNigeria\u00a0 was being attacked due to renewed Xenophobic attacks on
\nNigerians and other nationals in South Africa.<\/p>\n
Several personnel of army, police and other security agents were on the
\nroad leading to Shoprite at ABS junction, Onitsha to ensure that the
\nplace was not attacked.<\/p>\n
It would be recalled that Shoprite in Lagos state was attacked on
\nTuesday over the same issue.
\nThe MTN offices in the state, particularly in Awka, the state capital
\nwas shut for business activities in the day.<\/p>\n
A staff of MTN office in Awka under condition of anonymity told this
\nreporter that the junior staff were directed to operate from their homes
\nto avoid any negative occurrence.<\/p>\n
“We were told on Tuesday that only the senior staff were expected in
\noffice, while we wait for further directives,” he said.<\/p>\n
The Chairman of the Igbo Socio-Cultural organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo, in
\nAnambra state, Chief Demian Ogene Okeke, has condemned the xenophobia
\nattacks on Nigerians in South Africa.<\/p>\n
He described it as a diplomatic hatred, because of the economy position
\nof Nigeria globally, as the giant of Africa, which has remain unchanged
\nin their favour.<\/p>\n
Okeke, who reacted on the issue, questioned the essence of the renewed
\nattacks on Nigerians, which has resulted to gruesome killings, looting,
\nburning of property Nigerians as well Nigerian Embassy attack in South
\nAfrica.<\/p>\n
“This is in spite of the fortunes Nigerians spent to sure they got their
\nindependent from their Colonial Masters.<\/p>\n
“How can any right thinking person created by God, attack and burn a
\nfellow human being just because of a slogan “giant of Africa”<\/p>\n
He called on the special envoy dispatch by President Mohammadu Buhari to
\nthe South African on the issue to achieve the desired diplomacy for
\nNigeria interest.<\/p>\n
“It’s so sad, I wish Late Nelson Madela could resurrect to see his
\npeople attacking a country who help fought for the freedom of today’s
\nSouth Africa.<\/p>\n
On the retaliatory attacks on South Africa Companies in Nigeria; the
\nMTN, DSTV, Shoprite among others in Lagos and Uyo, Okeke said there was
\nno need for it because over 80 per cent of Nigerians are employees of
\nthese outfits.<\/p>\n
“Attacking these enterprises at this harsh economy situation the country
\nis currently going through now, would these employees survived with
\ntheir families.<\/p>\n
“For me, since the South African government has failed to protect the
\nlives of Nigerians, those living there should take\u00a0 up any availability
\nto defense themselves and their families,” he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the South-East Young Progressive Forum (YPF)has also
\ncondemned the attacks on Africans and most especially Nigerians in South
\nAfrica.<\/p>\n
National Leader of the group, Comrade Otimkpu Paschal Chizoba, in a
\nstatement in Awka on Wednesday, said\u00a0 “it is sad and unfortunate that
\nthe lives and livelihoods of Africans and Nigerians living in South
\nAfrica are\u00a0 being destroyed with such wantonness and with such
\ncarelessness and recklessness.”<\/p>\n
