Nigeria has pulled out of the World Economic Forum holding in Cape Town,
\nSouth Africa, days after it said it was going to take \u201cdefinitive
\nmeasures\u201d on the xenophobic attacks on her citizens in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cNigerian government has boycotted the World Economic Forum holding in
\nCape Town, South Africa,\u201d President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s aide on New Media
\nBashir Ahmad said on Wednesday. \u201cSome individuals from Nigeria including
\na former Minister are attending on their own.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rwanda, Congo and Malawi earlier announced that they will not attend the
\nevent because of the latest xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals and
\ntheir businesses. South Africa\u2019s neighbour Botswana told her citizens
\n\u201ctravelling to South Africa to exercise extreme caution in light of
\nrecent developments resulting in violent unrests.\u201d<\/p>\n
Zambia also called off a planned football friendly with South Africa.<\/p>\n
Although South Africa\u2019s police minister and high commissioner to Nigeria
\nsaid the attacks on foreign nationals were acts of criminality,
\nPresident Cyril Ramaphosa told business leaders on the sidelines of WEF
\nin Cape Town that South Africa must quell attacks on foreigners.<\/p>\n
\u201cTaking action against people from other nations is not justified and
\nshould never be allowed in our beautiful country. \u2026 We need to quell
\nthose incidents of unrest,\u201d Ramaphosa said.<\/p>\n
A day earlier, he tacitly acknowledged the attacks were xenophobic but
\nthat the government would not allow them to fester.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are a country that is completely committed against xenophobia,\u201d he
\nsaid. \u201cWe do not allow and cannot tolerate attacks on people from other
\nAfrican countries.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nigeria\u2019s initial tepid reactions to the latest waves of attacks irked a
\nlarge percentage of Nigeria\u2019s youthful population, with many calling for
\nthe government to send a strong message to South Africa.<\/p>\n
Nigeria\u2019s President Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to meet Ramaphosa in
\nOctober. But he planned on sending a special to the country to discuss
\nthe attacks on her citizens.<\/p>\n
But the boycott of WEF signalled a new direction in the handling of the
\nmatter.<\/p>\n
Apart from pulling out of the World Economic Forum, Nigeria is also
\nexpected to recall its ambassador to South Africa<\/p>\n
