A rights group, International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule
\nof Law (Intersociety) has called for the upgrade of the educational
\nqualification required for one to be a president or governor in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
The group which recommended a Masters Degree for people seeking to
\nbecome governors or president in Nigeria said its proposition were as a
\nresult of the recent judgement of the Presidential Election Petition
\nTribunal which upheld President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s election in spite of
\nthe call to question of his school certificate by his opponent, Alhaji
\nAtiku Abubakar.<\/p>\n
The group in a press statement made available to this journalist on
\nFriday in Awka, Anambra state and signed by its chairman, board of
\ntrustees, Mr Emeka Umeagbalasi said it amounted to racing back into the
\ncave to allow persons with no known educational background to govern the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt also amounts to racing back to the cave from being the Africa\u2019s
\ncradle of knowledge for Nigeria\u2019s seats of Presidential and
\nGubernatorial powers to be cheaply and illiterately occupied by persons
\nwithout physically proven or certified educational certificates or
\nqualifications.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is further insulting beyond quantification to the modern day
\nknowledgeable world for the offices of the President and Governor in
\nNigeria to be allowed to be occupied by persons with ordinary secondary
\nschool or primary school certificates-whereas in other social climes,
\nsuch are occupied by professors and doctorate degree holders with
\nunassailable charisma.\u201d It stated.<\/p>\n
It noted\u00a0 said that it would be wise to raise the educational
\nqualification of governors and the president of the country if it must
\ndevelop alongside other countries of the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is, therefore, time to mandatorily, constitutionally and statutorily
\nraise the qualification for the seats of the President and Governor and
\ntheir deputies in Nigeria to nothing less than Master\u2019s Degree.<\/p>\n
\u201cIgnorance and stark illiteracy must never be allowed a space over
\nknowledge and ideas in the country\u2019s corridors of power. As a
\njurisprudential tradition in the world over, judicial blunders and
\ndisasters such as the instant case arising from apex and appellate
\ndecided cases are periodically remedied by ways of constitutional
\namendments or enactment of new laws to take care of such judicial
\nblunders or disasters.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hereby call on the National Assembly of Nigeria to act on the above
