It has been over 45 days since a presidential candidate in Nigeria\u2019s
\n2019 election, Omoyele Sowore, has been detained without bail by state
\nagents; and one would have thought that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the
\nNational Leader of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), could
\nlearn from recent events and begin to toe the path of honour in his
\npursuit for more power.<\/p>\n

In the piece, \u201cI Pity Tinubu\u201d, where I had berated President
\nMuhammadu Buhari during his first\u00a0 tenure for alienating the former
\nLagos Governor, I asserted that, \u201cif dynamic opposition is the
\nlife-wire of a democracy, it is very fitting then to name him (Tinubu)
\nthe saviour of Nigeria\u2019s current democratic journey.\u201d Yet, the
\nhistory of that journey would be incomplete without a defining chapter
\non Omoyele Sowore.<\/p>\n

Backed by his revolutionary newspaper, Sahara Reporters, Sowore was a
\nkey component in the vanguard of the opposition movement that not only
\ncatapulted Tinubu to the helm, but also instrumental in gaining power in
\n2015. Sahara Reporters became a daily testament for transparency in
\ngovernment. Such activities contributed in no small measure to how the
\ncorrupt leadership under the Peoples\u2019 Democratic Party (PDP) was
\nexposed. That is squarely how the APC became the ruling party. It is on
\nthat platter that Bola Tinubu became its National Leader, even though he
\nis neither the president nor the chairman of the party.<\/p>\n

Today, the Asiwaju might have emerged as the shrewdest politician in the
\nNigerian history. Today, having dictated the content and the character
\nof the current government, including the leadership of the ruling party,
\nand both the executive and the legislative arms of power, Tinubu\u2019s
\nfaculty foresees the North under his palm. Today, with such
\nunprecedented influence, the current optics is that the man even
\ndictates who is intimidated, investigated or arrested, as his political
\nfoes are being hounded with an interesting sense of urgency. Today,
\nbelieving that he has successfully humbled those from the East with a
\nfarrago of sectional politics and primordial prejudice, the emerging
\nspectacle is that former Lagos State governor is now zeroing in on
\npotential opponents in the West towards the 2023 presidential race.<\/p>\n

So, Asiwaju Tinubu, where is Comrade Sowore?<\/p>\n

Make no mistake, any grudge from Tinubu against Sowore is superficially
\nunderstandable. Though they worked together in 2015 against the common
\nenemy in the gross misrule under PDP, quite alright, Sowore has always
\nseen Tinubu as the godfather of the corrupt cabal stifling progress in
\nSouth-West Nigeria in recent times. Therefore, even if Tinubu\u2014the
\nalpha and omega of the ruling party\u2014has no hands in the travails of
\nthe publisher of Sahara Reporters, his stoic silence suggests a clear
\nacquiescence, and naked duplicity to boot.<\/p>\n

Moreover, to who much is given, much is expected. Tinubu can learn from
\nthe popularity of recent protest in Nuremberg, Germany, where the
\nEastern youths unleashed their anger on Senator Ike Ekweremadu. While
\nthe former Deputy Senate president was neither the governor of the
\nentire East nor the only politician involved in the gross exploitation
\nof the region, the Eastern youths saw him as their leader and thus
\ndeserving a share of the burden of failure in leadership. It is only
\nnormal, therefore, that the Western youths are craving for bold
\nleadership from their titanic Asiwaju in the current predicament where
\ntheir promising and courageous Comrade is being detained with trumped-up
\ncharges.<\/p>\n

As I elaborated in an earlier essay: \u201cSowore And Revolution: As Buhari
\nForgets Why And How He Became President\u201d, the very rhetoric, in which
\nOmeyele Sowore is being hounded today, is a page from the opposition
\nmovement that brought APC to power. In short, the history has shown that
\nboth Tinubu and Buhari had effused worse revolutionary themes in their
\npath to power, yet they were never arrested by past governments for the
\nfreedom of speech.<\/p>\n

This growing pattern of injustice, as well as hypocrisy in Buhari\u2019s
\ndemocratic regime, explains the necessity of #RevolutionNow. The
\nNigerian masses are worried that power struggles in Nigeria are merely
\nto replace existing leaders with their opponents, whose attitude in
\ngovernance would not be different from those of their predecessors. The
\nAsiwaju must also come to terms with the reality that the Yoruba
\nintelligentsia is understandably irate that a party it helped to gain
\npower on the mantra of equity, probity, and integrity has become the
\ngrand promoter of injustice.<\/p>\n

Bola Tinubu better knows to toe the path of honor in his quest for more
\npower. He should know not to ignore the sophistication of South-West
\npolitics. The Yoruba did not defend June 12th because of the person MKO
\nAbiola nor vote for APC in 2015 because of the man Buhari. The common
\ncause was justice. It was Abiola yesterday; it is Sowore today; and it
\ncan be any one tomorrow.<\/p>\n
