The next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) has been
\nofficially launched in a video message from the President of Rwanda and
\nthe Commonwealth Secretary-General.<\/p>\n
President Paul Kagame and Secretary-General Patricia Scotland announced
\nthat CHOGM 2020 will be held at the Kigali Convention Centre during the
\nweek starting 22 June. Leaders from all 53 Commonwealth countries are
\nexpected to attend.<\/p>\n
The theme for the meeting is \u2018Delivering A Common Future: Connecting,
\nInnovating, Transforming\u2019. Five sub-themes have been identified for
\ndiscussion: Governance and Rule of Law, ICT & Innovation, Youth, Energy
\nand Environment, and Trade.<\/p>\n
Building on progress since CHOGM 2018 in London, leaders are expected to
\ndiscuss ways the contemporary Commonwealth can transform societies, in
\naccordance with Commonwealth Charter values of democracy,
\nmultilateralism, sustainable development, and empowerment of women and
\nyouth.<\/p>\n
President Kagame said: \u201cIt will be a great pleasure to welcome leaders
\nof the Commonwealth when they gather in Kigali. We will work hard to
\nmake everybody feel Rwanda is an extension of their home.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe distinctive aspect of CHOGM 2020 will be connectivity including
\nwhat young people can do with technology to create vibrant societies and
\ndevelop our economies.\u201d<\/p>\n
Secretary-General Scotland stated: \u201cI think the youth demographic we
\nhave now is a real opportunity.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be a very exciting chance
\nfor us to enable our young people to develop and deploy the skills they
\nneed so they can fulfill their potential.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy connecting, innovating and transforming, the Commonwealth opens up
\nscope for mobilising the talent of people of all ages and backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n
As well as the meeting of heads of government, the week will include a
\nmeeting of foreign ministers and forums to engage young people, civil
\nsociety, women and the business community.<\/p>\n
