President Muhammadu Buhari Monday in Abuja pledged that his
\nadministration will continue to adequately fund the judiciary to enable
\nit discharge its responsibilities.<\/p>\n
The President also said it is the collective duty of the three arms of
\ngovernment to ensure fair justice delivery and safeguard the rights of
\nall Nigerians.<\/p>\n
The President spoke at the commissioning of the annex building of the
\nheadquarters of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), Area 3,
\nAbuja, which also marked the valedictory session of the President of the
\nCourt, Justice Babatunde Adejumo.<\/p>\n
President Buhari said: ”You will all recall that in 2014, the entire
\nbudgetary allocation to the judiciary was N68 billion.<\/p>\n
”Today, the judiciary budgetary allocation has gone up to N100 billion.
\nRest assured that we shall continue to adequately fund the judiciary to
\nensure it is enabled to discharge its responsibilities.”<\/p>\n
The Nigerian leader used the occasion to appeal to the three arms of
\ngovernment to continue collaborative partnership to ensure that
\npolicies, programmes and projects of this administration positively
\nimpact the lives of Nigerians.<\/p>\n
”Simply put, all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity, religion and
\npolitics deserve peaceful and prosperous lives.<\/p>\n
”Where these basic rights are trampled upon, Nigerians deserve fair
\njustice delivery.<\/p>\n
”It is, therefore, our collective duty to work collaboratively to
\nensure that such rights are safeguarded,” he said.<\/p>\n
Congratulating the President of the Court on his retirement and
\nmeritorious service to the country, the President said Justice Adejumo’s
\nnumerous contributions are well known and appreciated.<\/p>\n
”I am confident his legacy will have a positive impact on those who
\nfollow him,” he said.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the mandate of the Court, the President recalled that it was
\nestablished as a specialised Court to adjudicate on disputes arising
\nfrom and relating to labour, industrial and employment matters.<\/p>\n
”Indeed, it is the Court in Nigeria that is constitutionally mandated
\nto perform these functions. Thus, the performance of this court directly
\nimpacts Nigeria’s ease of doing business indices,” he said.<\/p>\n
The President noted that the completion of the Annex Building will
\nfurther enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of justice delivery by
\nthe Court.<\/p>\n
”Furthermore, the socio-economic impact of this Court cannot be
\ndownplayed as it also provides the platform for employees, retirees as
\nwell as the dependents of deceased employees to find justice when
\ntreated unfairly,” he added.<\/p>\n
