\nRivers State Governor,\u00a0 Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has advised the Nigerian Army
\nto focus on their traditional role of securing the country,\u00a0 instead of
\nillegally delving into politics,\u00a0 which has destroyed their image .<\/p>\n

Governor Wike also said that the\u00a0 neglect of critical areas of
\nconstitutional responsibility by the Nigerian Army has negatively
\naffected its ability to perform.<\/p>\n

Governor Wike spoke during a Courtesy Visit by Joint Senate and House of
\nRepresentatives Committee on Army at the Government House Port Harcourt
\non Friday.<\/p>\n

He said: “The Army should be sent\u00a0 to where there are serious security
\ninfractions.<\/p>\n

“But the reality today is that everyone now has\u00a0 soldiers attached to
\nthem while the general security of the country suffers.\u00a0 The role of the
\nArmy is to defend the territorial integrity of the country and maintain
\ngeneral security.\u00a0 The Army must return to their primary
\nresponsibility”.<\/p>\n

He said that the Nigerian Army must Channel her resources to where they
\nare needed for the good of the country.<\/p>\n

Governor Wike\u00a0 stated that in Rivers State,\u00a0 the Nigerian Army has been
\nhelpful in tackling insecurity and kidnapping.<\/p>\n

He said: “The Army has supported us in terms of fighting insecurity and
\nkidnapping.\u00a0 They have worked with other security agencies to improve
\nthe security of the State.<\/p>\n

“But they played very negative roles during the elections.\u00a0 The Army was
\ninvolved in ballot snatching and attempts to subvert the will of Rivers
\npeople. The authorities should work hard to change the perception of the
\nArmy on the streets “.<\/p>\n

Governor Wike said despite the negative roles of the Army,\u00a0 the Rivers
\nState Government under his leadership has invested heavily in the Army.<\/p>\n

“There is no Governor in this country that can challenge the level of
\nsupport that we have availed the Nigerian Army.\u00a0 We funded the
\noperationalization of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army.\u00a0 I have never
\nturned my back on the Army or any security agency in terms of logistics
\nand funding”, he said.<\/p>\n

The Governor said that the N100billion allocated to the Army in the 2020
\nbudget is inadequate.\u00a0 He also wondered what has happened to the $1
\nbillion withdrawn from the Excess Crude Account for the equipping of the
\nNigerian Army.<\/p>\n

Earlier,\u00a0 Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army,\u00a0 Senator Ali Ndume
\ncommended Governor Wike for supporting the Nigerian Army to deliver on
\nits mandate.<\/p>\n

He said: “Port Harcourt is now secure due to the investments\u00a0 of
\nGovernor Wike in the security of the State.\u00a0 In collaboration with the
\nsecurity agencies,\u00a0 Governor Wike has been able to restore security to
\nthe State.<\/p>\n

“The level of security in Rivers State wouldn’t have been achieved
\nwithout the support of Governor Wike.\u00a0 If all governors were doing\u00a0 same
\nthings in addressing security challenges like Governor Wike,\u00a0 the
\ncountry would have been better off “.<\/p>\n

He stated that the N100bllion allocated to the Nigerian Army in 2020
\nbudget would not achieve results,\u00a0 noting that efforts must be geared
\ntowards\u00a0 attracting more support for the Army.<\/p>\n

He praised the Rivers State Governor for the massive infrastructural
\ndevelopment witnessed\u00a0 across the state, noting that\u00a0 the changes are
\nnoticeable.<\/p>\n

Ndume described Governor Wike as a development minded politician who is
\nneeded for the growth of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
