{"id":69990,"date":"2019-10-21T16:31:59","date_gmt":"2019-10-21T15:31:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=69990"},"modified":"2019-10-21T16:31:59","modified_gmt":"2019-10-21T15:31:59","slug":"dangote-refinery-empowers-200-youths-in-host-community-through-skills-acquisition-training-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/dangote-refinery-empowers-200-youths-in-host-community-through-skills-acquisition-training-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"Dangote Refinery Empowers 200 Youths in Host Community through Skills Acquisition Training Programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The programme marks another level of Dangote Petroleum Refinery&#8217;s<br \/>\nintervention as it is targeted at providing vocational skills to the<br \/>\nteeming youth population<\/p>\n<p>About 200 youths from Ibeju-Lekki community in Lagos State have<br \/>\ngraduated from various skills acquisition programme organised by Dangote<br \/>\nPetroleum Refinery (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dangote.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.Dangote.com&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1571753890634000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHo4DoorZvpQHJUJkJT7-HixMlfqA\" data-mt-detrack-inspected=\"true\" data-mt-detrack-attachment-inspected=\"true\">www.Dangote.com<\/a>) as a way of transforming society<br \/>\nand providing employment opportunities for the youths.<\/p>\n<p>The programme was put together by Dangote Petroleum Refinery and<br \/>\nfacilitated by the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) and the<br \/>\nNigerian Content Development and Management Board (NCDMB).<\/p>\n<p>The skills acquisition programme, which cut across a wide range of<br \/>\nvocational skills such as plumbing, welding, iron bending, auto<br \/>\nmechanics and electrical works, marked the successful completion of the<br \/>\nfirst batch trainees.<\/p>\n<p>The programme marks another level of Dangote Petroleum Refinery&#8217;s<br \/>\nintervention as it is targeted at providing vocational skills to the<br \/>\nteeming youth population in its host communities.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Dangote Group Executive Director,<br \/>\nStrategy, Capital Projects and Portfolio Development, Mr. Devakumar<br \/>\nEdwin said the initiative was a demonstration of Dangote Refinery&#8217;s<br \/>\ncommitment toward capacity-building and youth empowerment in the<br \/>\ncountry.<\/p>\n<p>Edwin said the programme was another level of Dangote Petroleum<br \/>\nRefinery&#8217;s intervention targeted at providing vocational skills to the<br \/>\nteeming youth population in its host communities. He said the programme<br \/>\nwas also aimed at making youth from its host communities employable.<\/p>\n<p>He said the 200 youths from Ibeju-Lekki community in Lagos State<br \/>\ngraduated from various skills acquisition programmes put together by<br \/>\nDangote Petroleum Refinery as a way of transforming society and<br \/>\nproviding employment opportunities for the youths.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the graduands to be more focused and diligent in whatever they<br \/>\ndo and serve as frontier to others.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the tools given to you today, you can be good ambassadors of this<br \/>\ngreat community. So many graduates outside are still searching for jobs,<br \/>\nbut yours is different because you have been trained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are going to give you our maximum support to ensure you are employed<br \/>\nin our operations, as our host communities remains our priority. These<br \/>\nskills given to you today, can take you to various places and attract<br \/>\nbetter opportunity if managed effectively,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Edwin advised the graduands to commit themselves to continuous learning<br \/>\nand development as the business environment changes frequently, and<br \/>\npromised to assist them to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, as the petroleum refining &amp; fertiliser complex comes<br \/>\non stream, it is expected that will be a population boom in the<br \/>\nsurrounding communities, who requires the services of the trainees.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed optimism that the host communities will experience a<br \/>\nturnaround in their fortunes very soon.<\/p>\n<p>Also at the event, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State promised to<br \/>\nemploy the 200 youth of Ibeju-Lekki community who graduated from various<br \/>\nskills acquisition programmes in the Lekki Free Trade Zone.<\/p>\n<p>Sanwo-Olu, represented by Dr. Tunde Sodade, the Managing Director of<br \/>\nLekki Free Trade Zone Worldwide, said the governor was passionate about<br \/>\nemploying the youths through skilled vocational training.<\/p>\n<p>He lauded the Dangote Group for the initiative, and urged the newly<br \/>\ngraduated youth to be good ambassadors to the state and their community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will ensure that all of you that graduated today, will be employed<br \/>\nat the free zone because we believe that what you learnt will be useful<br \/>\nfor the development of the zone. I urge you all to be good examples to<br \/>\nothers and always demonstrate better character and integrity in what you<br \/>\ndo,&#8221; Sanwo-Olu said.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the graduands to register their names with the Lekki Free Trade<br \/>\nZone management, so they could be employed by all companies within the<br \/>\nzone.<\/p>\n<p>The State Coordinator of the Nigerian Directorate of Employees (NDE),<br \/>\nMrs. Serena Edward lauded Dangote group for pioneering the skills<br \/>\nvocational training for the youths in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Edward said the programme which started six months ago, had today<br \/>\nrecorded tremendous success among the 200 graduands.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We encountered some challenges in the course of the programme, which<br \/>\nthe community elders intervened. The programme has transformed the<br \/>\nstudents to do better and also improved their standards of creativity on<br \/>\nthe jobs leant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, the programme has facilitated the students to open an account<br \/>\nwith a bank as a sign of seriousness towards business. Dangote has given<br \/>\nthe community youths useful tools to work with and advised you use it<br \/>\ndiligently,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Oba Olumuyiwa Ogunbekun, the Oni-Lekki of Lekki encouraged the youth to<br \/>\nfully utilise the skills they acquired. He commended Dangote Refinery<br \/>\nfor its unwavering support to community development initiatives in the<br \/>\nstate and emphasised the need for the youth to work hard.<\/p>\n<p>Ogunbekun also urged Dangote to assist in employing the trained youths<br \/>\nin other to foster youth mutual relationship in the community and make<br \/>\nthem practice what they learnt<\/p>\n<p>He also commended Aliko Dangote for bringing development to the<br \/>\ncommunities through its investment in refinery and petrochemicals and<br \/>\nurged other Nigerians of means to invest locally and lift the economy of<br \/>\nthe people at the grassroots.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Musa Ajibola, an instructor, urged companies to follow what Dangote<br \/>\nhad done, while urging companies to make the training one year programme<br \/>\nthan six months. He said the training had broadened the knowledge of the<br \/>\nyouths toward improving their knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>One of the students, Balogun Fuad said the programme was laudable,<br \/>\nadding that it came at the right time. According to him, most youths in<br \/>\nthe area do not have meaningful livelihood, while urging Dangote and<br \/>\nothers to employ them.<\/p>\n<p>Another student, Balogun Owolabi said the programme had created<br \/>\nopportunities for most of the youth.
