\n(AP) \u2014 Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the shadowy leader of the Islamic State
\ngroup who presided over its global jihad and became arguably the world\u2019s
\nmost wanted man, is believed dead after being targeted by a U.S.
\nmilitary raid in Syria.<\/p>\n

A U.S. official told The Associated Press late Saturday that al-Baghdadi
\nwas targeted in Syria\u2019s northwestern Idlib province. The official said
\nconfirmation that the IS chief was killed in an explosion is pending. No
\nother details were available. The official was not authorized to discuss
\nthe strike and spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump teased a major announcement, tweeting Saturday
\nnight that \u201cSomething very big has just happened!\u201d A White House
\nspokesman, Hogan Gidley, would say only that the president would be
\nmaking a \u201cmajor statement\u201d at 9 a.m. ET Sunday.<\/p>\n

If confirmed, the operation\u2019s success could prove a major boost for
\nTrump. The recent pullback of U.S. troops he ordered from northeastern
\nSyria raised a storm of bipartisan criticism in Washington that the
\nmilitant group could regain strength, after it had lost vast stretches
\nof territory it had once controlled.<\/p>\n

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Syria war monitor, reported
\nan attack carried out by a squadron of eight helicopters accompanied by
\na warplane belonging to the international coalition on positions of the
\nHurras al-Deen, an al-Qaida-linked group, in the Barisha area north of
\nIdlib city, after midnight on Saturday. IS operatives are believed to be
\nhiding in the area, it said.<\/p>\n

It said the helicopters targeted IS positions with heavy strikes for
\nabout 120 minutes, during which jihadists fired at the aircraft with
\nheavy weapons. The Britain-based Observatory, which operates through a
\nnetwork of activists on the ground, documented the death of 9 people as
\na result of the coalition helicopter attack. It is not yet known whether
\nal-Baghdadi is one of them, it said, adding that the death toll is
\nlikely to rise due to the large number of wounded.<\/p>\n

Al-Baghdadi\u2019s presence in the village, which is a few kilometers away
\nfrom the Turkish border, would come as a surprise, even if some IS
\nleaders are believed to have fled to Idlib after losing their last
\nsliver of territory in Syria to U.S.-allied Kurdish forces in March. The
\nsurrounding areas are largely controlled by a rival of the Islamic State
\ngroup \u2014 the al-Qaida-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS \u2014 although
\nother jihadi groups sympathetic to IS operate there. Unverified video
\ncirculated online by Syrian groups appeared to support the Observatory
\nclaim that the operation occurred in Barisha.<\/p>\n

The intelligence source on the militant leader\u2019s whereabouts could not
\nbe immediately confirmed, but both Iraqi and Kurdish officials claimed a
\nrole. The Turkish military also Tweeted that prior to the operation in
\nIdlib, it exchanged \u201cinformation\u201d and coordinated with U.S. military
\nauthorities.<\/p>\n

Kurdish forces appeared ready to portray al-Baghdadi\u2019s death as a joint
\nvictory for their faltering alliance with the U.S., weeks after Trump
\nordered American forces to withdraw from northeastern Syria, all but
\nabandoning Washington\u2019s allies to a wide-ranging Turkish assault.<\/p>\n

The commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi,
\ntweeted: \u201cSuccessful& historical operation due to a joint intelligence
\nwork with the United States of America.\u201d<\/p>\n

A senior Iraqi security official told The Associated Press that Iraqi
\nintelligence played a part in the operation. Al-Baghdadi and his wife
\nboth detonated explosive vests they were wearing during the U.S.
\ncommando operation, he said.<\/p>\n

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was divulging
\nsensitive information. He added that other IS leaders were killed in the
\nattack.<\/p>\n

Al-Baghdadi has led IS for the last five years, presiding over its
\nascendancy as it cultivated a reputation for beheadings and attracted
\nhundreds of thousands of followers to a sprawling and self-styled
\ncaliphate in Iraq and Syria. He remained among the few IS commanders
\nstill at large despite multiple claims in recent years about his death
\nand even as his so-called caliphate dramatically shrank, with many
\nsupporters who joined the cause either imprisoned or jailed.<\/p>\n

His exhortations were instrumental in inspiring terrorist attacks in the
\nheart of Europe and in the United States. Shifting away from the airline
\nhijackings and other mass-casualty attacks that came to define al-Qaida,
\nal-Baghdadi and other IS leaders supported smaller-scale acts of
\nviolence that would be harder for law enforcement to prepare for and
\nprevent.<\/p>\n

They encouraged jihadists who could not travel to the caliphate to kill
\nwhere they were, with whatever weapon they had at their disposal. In the
\nU.S., multiple extremists have pledged their allegiance to al-Baghdadi
\non social media, including a woman who along with her husband committed
\na 2015 massacre at a holiday party in San Bernardino, California.<\/p>\n

With a $25 million U.S. bounty on his head, al-Baghdadi has been far
\nless visible in recent years, releasing only sporadic audio recordings,
\nincluding one just last month in which he called on members of the
\nextremist group to do all they could to free IS detainees and women held
\nin jails and camps.<\/p>\n

The purported audio was his first public statement since last April,
\nwhen he appeared in a video for the first time in five years.<\/p>\n

In 2014, he was a black-robed figure delivering a sermon from the pulpit
\nof Mosul\u2019s Great Mosque of al-Nuri, his only known public appearance. He
\nurged Muslims around the world to swear allegiance to the caliphate and
\nobey him as its leader.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a burden to accept this responsibility to be in charge of you,\u201d
\nhe said in the video. \u201cI am not better than you or more virtuous than
\nyou. If you see me on the right path, help me. If you see me on the
\nwrong path, advise me and halt me. And obey me as far as I obey God.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though at minimum a symbolic victory for Western counterterrorism
\nefforts, his death would have unknown practical impact on possible
\nfuture attacks. He had been largely regarded as a symbolic figurehead of
\nthe global terror network, and was described as \u201cirrelevant for a long
\ntime\u201d by a coalition spokesman in 2017.<\/p>\n

Al-Baghdadi was born Ibrahim Awwad Ibrahim Ali al-Badri al-Samarrai in
\n1971 in Samarra, Iraq, and adopted his nom de guerre early on. Because
\nof anti-U.S. militant activity, he was detained by U.S. forces in Iraq
\nand sent to Bucca prison in February 2004, according to IS-affiliated
\nwebsites.<\/p>\n

He was released 10 months later, after which he joined the al-Qaida
\nbranch in Iraq of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. He later assumed control of the
\ngroup, known at the time as the Islamic State of Iraq.<\/p>\n

After Syria\u2019s civil war erupted in 2011, al-Baghdadi set about pursuing
\na plan for a medieval-style Islamic State, or caliphate. He merged a
\ngroup known as the Nusra Front, which initially welcomed moderate Sunni
\nrebels who were part of the uprising against Syrian President Bashar
\nAssad, with a new one known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
\nAl-Qaida\u2019s central leadership refused to accept the takeover and broke
\nwith al-Baghdadi.<\/p>\n

Al-Baghdadi\u2019s fighters captured a contiguous stretch of territory across
\nIraq and Syria, including key cities, and in June 2014, it announced its
\nown state \u2014 or caliphate. Al-Baghdadi became the declared caliph of the
\nnewly renamed Islamic State group. Under his leadership, the group
\nbecame known for macabre massacres and beheadings \u2014often posted online
\non militant websites \u2014 and a strict adherence to an extreme
\ninterpretation of Islamic law.<\/p>\n

Over the years, he has been reported multiple times to have been killed,
\nbut none has been confirmed. In 2017, Russian officials said there was a
\n\u201chigh probability\u201d he had been killed in a Russian airstrike on the
\noutskirts of Raqqa, but U.S. officials later said they believed he was
\nstill alive.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
