Rivers State Governor,\u00a0 Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has called on the Economic
\nand Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to fight corruption within the
\nambit of the law.<\/p>\n
Governor Wike declared that any action outside the tenets of the law is
\ncorruption.<\/p>\n
Governor Wike spoke on Monday during the “Walk Against Corruption”
\norganised by the EFCC to mark this year’s International Anti-corruption
\nDay.<\/p>\n
He said: “EFCC should fight corruption within the ambit of the law. We
\nwill support EFCC to fight corruption within the ambit of the law.<\/p>\n
“Anything outside the law, Rivers State Government will not be part of
\nit. Fighting corruption outside the law is corruption”.<\/p>\n
He appealed to the EFCC to ensure that they establish processes to fight
\ncorruption within the rule of law.<\/p>\n
“We urge the EFCC to fight corruption within the law. Anything that is
\nagainst the rule of law is no longer a fight against corruption”,
\nGovernor Wike said.<\/p>\n
He reiterated that the Rivers State Government will support legal
\nefforts by the EFCC to end corruption in the system.<\/p>\n
Governor Wike announced that the Rivers State Government has resolved to
\ndonate another premises to the EFCC to expand their operations in the
\nstate.<\/p>\n
He said that corruption has eaten deep into the national system,
\ndistorting the development process in the country, hence all
\nstakeholders should support the EFCC to fight corruption.<\/p>\n
“EFCC alone cannot fight corruption.\u00a0 It requires all Nigerians to join
\nhands to fight corruption . If you are in my Government and you don’t
\nwant to fight corruption,\u00a0 you cannot be in my Government.<\/p>\n
“Without law, EFCC cannot be in existence.\u00a0 It is the law that created
\nEFCC.\u00a0 So you must work within the law. Nigerians should know that
\ncorruption has eaten deep into the society.\u00a0 Corruption has set us back.
\nWe must all come out to join EFCC to fight corruption”, he said.<\/p>\n
Zonal Head of EFCC, Port Harcourt,\u00a0 Mr Abdulrasheed Wahab said that EFCC
\nis marking the International Anti-corruption Day with sister agencies
\nand para-military agencies to sensitise the public on the fight against
\ncorruption.<\/p>\n
He said\u00a0 this year’s theme is zero tolerance for corruption in the
\nmaritime and transport sectors.\u00a0 He said that the history of EFCC in
\nPort Harcourt is that of EFCC investigating the oil sector, illegal oil
\nbunkering, crude oil theft, economic sabotage and other related crimes
\nin the maritime sector.<\/p>\n
Wahab urged vessel owners,\u00a0 badge owners, boats and vehicles owners to
\nbe law abiding and\u00a0 obtain all relevant licenses from relevant
\nauthorities.\u00a0 He charged them to know their captains and drivers to stem
\nthe tide of illegality.<\/p>\n
He said that the EFCC has over the years worked for the recovery of more
\nthan N700billion and over\u00a0 $200 million (USD)\u00a0 and 407 mansions to the
\nFederal Government.<\/p>\n
He urged all groups to join the fight against corruption in the interest
\nof the development of the country.<\/p>\n
Leaders of Civil Society,\u00a0 the maritime sector and para-military
\nagencies who spoke after the walk declared their support in the fight
\nagainst corruption.<\/p>\n
The walk against corruption started at the EFCC Zonal Office at Old GRA
\nand terminated at the Rumuwoji Market.\u00a0 Governor Wike and the leaders
\nalso trekked back to Government House from the Rumuwoji Market.<\/p>\n
