Sowore: Jungle Justice in the Temple of Justice

\nThe re-arrest of Omoyele Sowore and his co defendant Olawale Bakare by
\nthe Department of State Security (DSS) is an all time low in the
\nhistory of Nigeria. The commando move right in the court is a clear
\ndisregard of the judiciary and a mockery of the rights of Sowore and
\nBakare. It would be recalled that the duo who were arrested for
\norganizing protest against the government of President Muhammadu
\nBuhari were released on bail after 124 days in detention amidst DSS
\nviolation of court order against unjustified detention.
\nThe constitution of the federal government has been desecrated by
\ninstitutions totally loyal to the presidency. As the number of
\ndissenting voices continue to increase in President Muhammadu Buhari
\ngulag, the wave of impunity continues to wax stronger among security
\nagencies.
\nNigerians May recall that Buhari led administration has no regard for
\nthe constitution. Col Sambo Dasuki is being held for four years
\ndespite a court order to grant him bail. El Zakzaky and his wife have
\nsimilar experience. We have so many Nigerian journalists locked up in
\njails across the country without trial. The leadership at the center
\nhas obviously inspired states to be reckless and adamant to issues of
\nconstitutional value.
\nAgainst constitutional requirements, the Tucano aircraft was purchased
\nwithout due process. A whopping sum of $1bn was approved without
\nNational Assembly approval to fight \u201cdepleted\u201d Biko Haram.
\nNigerians will not forget how the former Chief Justice of Nigeria,
\nWalter Onnoghen was illegally removed. Nigeria will always remember
\nthat against constitutional mandate, Buhari presented affidavit in
\nlieu of statement or certificate of West African School Certificate as
\nminimum qualification for re election where the court held that he is
\n\u201ceminently\u201d qualified. Tenure elongation of cherry picked
\npermanent secretaries and continued stay of service chiefs despite
\nattaining retirement, are dangerous precedents set by this
\nadministration.
\nThe bastardized constitution has opened so many gaps currently working
\nagainst hapless citizens. Without warrant the police can adopt and
\nextort and most times kill innocent people. Now the Federal Road
\nSafety Corps (FRSC) has declared the use of Global Positioning System
\n(GPS) for navigation illegal. Already vehicles are being seized and
\ndrivers forced to pay money and take psychiatric test.
\nCorruption war, one of the pillars of Buharis administration has
\nfailed to contain corrupt practices among government officials.
\nOpposition politicians and reputable financial observers across the
\nglobe have issued serial warnings that Nigeria economy heads for the
\ncliff edge.
\nSadly, the usual voices of conscience checkmating bad governance is
\ndrowning on daily bases. Some like former Lagos Governor, Bola Tinubu
\nand pastor Bakare are too ambitious to echo the feelings of Nigerians.
\nReasonable Nigerians are asking why former President Olusegun Obasanjo
\nis no longer talking despite the growing impunity of this government.
\nIs it the power probe or the presidential library? Former President
\nJonathan is a quiet person but rumore of complicity trails APC victory
\nin Bayelsa. With some Diezani Allison – Maduake loot stinking close to
\nJonathan, Nigerians are no longer sure of what to believe. Certainly
\nthis administration has something against everybody. They have
\nresource of blackmail, loyal institutions and trampled constitution to
\nrein in their foes.
\nWith almost every past leader in the opposition morally and physically
\nheld hostage over real or imaginary \u201ccorruption\u201d charges, the
\nBuhari led administration appears unstoppable, untouchable but not
\ninvincible. The commando style re-arrest of Sowore and Bakare is
\nanother action taken too far by the incumbent administration. Impunity
\ntaken too far breeds revolt. This administration appears to be begging
\nNigerians to take to the street as our constitution is trampled upon
\non daily bases.
