Musa of Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, on<br \/>\nThursday, granted the application of the Economic and Financial Crimes<br \/>\nCommission, EFCC, to keep the former attorney general and minister of<br \/>\nJustice, Mohammed Bello Adoke in its custody for additional 14 days<br \/>\npreparatory to his arraignment.<\/p>\n<p>In granting the application, the judge stated that \u201cthe extension of the<br \/>\nremand of the respondent for another 14 days for the purpose of his<br \/>\narraignment in court is necessary and granted as prayed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Commission took custody of Adoke on December 19, 2019, upon his<br \/>\narrival from Dubai, United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p>Adoke who fled the country in 2015, has pending criminal charge of<br \/>\nalleged abuse of office and money laundering in respect of the granting<br \/>\nof the Oil Prospecting License (OPL) 245 to Shell and ENI.<\/p>\n<p>It would be recalled that the government of former President Olusegun<br \/>\nObasanjo revoked the OPL 245, which the late General Sani Abacha granted<br \/>\nDan Etete, his then Petroleum Minister, and reassigned it to Shell<br \/>\nNigeria Exploration and Production Company, SNEPCO.<\/p>\n<p>Etete\u2019s Malabu Oil and Gas, however, reclaimed the oil block in 2006<br \/>\nthrough the court. While Shell challenged the decision, a \u2018fraudulent<br \/>\nsettlement and resolution\u2019 was consummated under President Goodluck<br \/>\nJonathan\u2019s government, with Shell and ENI buying the oil block from<br \/>\nMalabu in the sum of $1.1billion.<\/p>\n<p>Investigations by the EFCC into the deal revealed crimes that border on<br \/>\nconspiracy, forgery of bank documents, bribery, corruption and money<br \/>\nlaundering to the tune of over $1.2 billion against\u00a0 Malabu Oil and Gas<br \/>\nLimited, Shell Nigeria Ultra Deep (SNUD), Nigeria Agip Exploration (NAE)<br \/>\nand their officials, culminating in criminal charges against Adoke,<br \/>\nEtete and others, which are pending in both the FCT High Court and the<br \/>\nFederal High Court, Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The absence of the defendants slowed the prosecution of the suspects,<br \/>\nforcing the EFCC to obtain an arrest warrant against them on April 17,<br \/>\n2019.<\/p>\n<p>Adoke, however, arrived the country on Thursday, December 19, 2019 from<br \/>\nDubai, United Arab Emirates into the waiting arms of EFCC operatives at<br \/>\nthe Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>His return has now cleared the way for him to answer to the charges<br \/>\nagainst him.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Musa adjourned the case to enable its assignment by the Chief<br \/>\nJudge.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Justice A.O.
