LAGOS, NIGERIA, JANUARY 06, 2020, United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA)
\ntoday, announced that Oliver Alawuba has been appointed as CEO of UBA
\nAfrica, overseeing the bank\u2019s\u00a0 20 African country operations,
\nex-Nigeria.\u00a0 He succeeds Victor Osadolor, who retires from the Group
\nBoard, after 9 years of service working at UBA.\u00a0 UBA Africa serves over
\n19 million customers across the African continent, providing retail,
\ncommercial and institutional banking services, leading financial
\ninclusion and implementing cutting edge products including the first
\never banking chat bot in Africa, LEO.<\/p>\n
Mr. Alawuba has close to three decades of banking industry experience.
\nHe was once the CEO of UBA Ghana and rose to become Regional CEO, UBA
\nAfrica before returning to Nigeria to run UBA\u2019s East Bank.\u00a0 Under his
\nleadership, UBA\u2019s Nigerian East Bank division became the fastest
\ngrowing regional bank in the Group.<\/p>\n
The Board further appointed Senegalese national, Abdoul-Aziz Dia as
\nExecutive Director for Treasury and International Banking, subject to
\nthe approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Aziz becomes the first
\nnon-Nigerian Group Executive Director of the Bank, bringing a wealth of
\nmulti geographical experience to the Group.\u00a0 Mr Dia will be responsible
\nfor UBA\u2019s global network of operations in New York, London and Paris,
\ntogether with Group Treasury, where UBA offers a sophisticated suite of
\nproducts to multinationals, international institutions and African
\nclients.<\/p>\n
Chukwuma Nweke, currently the Executive Director Operations, was
\nconfirmed by the Board as the Group Executive Director, Retail and
\nPayments, demonstrating the Group\u2019s commitment to its retail offering.
\nChuks has close to three decades of banking experience spanning Banking
\nOperations, Finance, Technology, Audit and Strategy.<\/p>\n
The Board also announced the appointment of Chiugo Ndubisi as Group
\nExecutive Director and the Group Chief Operating Officer, subject to the
\napproval of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Chiugo is a professional with
\nalmost three decades of banking experience that includes the role of
\nChief Finance Officer(CFO) and Executive Director on the board of a
\nfinancial institution. His in-depth understanding of banking and finance
\nindustry dynamics will bring a lot of value to the Group Board of UBA.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the appointments, Group Chairman Tony O. Elumelu said
\n\u201cThese appointments emphasise the Group\u2019s commitment to our
\npan-African and global network, our huge retail client base and our
\noperational infrastructure.\u00a0 We are focused on improving our efficiency
\nand further strengthening our pan-African mission, using the

Elumelu thanked both the outgoing Deputy Managing Director\/CEO, UBA
\nAfrica, Mr. Victor Osadolor, and the former Regional CEO for UBA in East
\nand Southern Africa, Emeke Iweriebor, who just retired from the board,
\nfor their contributions to the Bank.\u00a0 \u201cVictor and Emeke were key
\nplayers during the merger of Standard Trust Bank and UBA and have been
\nvaluable contributors to the growth of the Bank. We wish them well\u201d.<\/p>\n
The Board appointments underline UBA\u2019s broader commitment to investing
\nin the highest quality human capital.\u00a0 The Bank recently reformed its
\ngrade structure and technology teams, having reduced its grade structure
\nfrom 16 to 12 levels, at the end of 2019.\u00a0 The Bank welcomed 3,000 new
\nstaff members in 2019 and promoted over 5,000 employees.\u00a0 UBA is the
\nlargest employer\u00a0 in the Nigerian banking sector, with a staff strength
