Rivers State Government has reiterated that the Economic and Financial
\nCrimes Commission\u00a0 (EFCC) has no power to investigate the financial
\ntransactions of the state.<\/p>\n

Reacting to statements credited to the Acting Chairman of EFCC, Mr
\nIbrahim Magu, the state Commissioner for Information and Communications,
\nPastor Paulinus Nsirim, stated that EFCC can only investigate the
\ngovernment if it vacates the Federal High Court judgment that declared
\nthat it cannot investigate the financial transactions of the government.<\/p>\n

“Magu cannot claim that that judgment cannot stand, except he wants
\nNigerians to believe that he has started issuing instructions to the
\nSupreme Court.<\/p>\n

“It is unfortunate that in a democracy someone holding a public office
\nwould want to muzzle the Court, “the Commissioner said.<\/p>\n

On the allegation that Rivers State is the second capital of money
\nlaundering in Nigeria after Lagos, the Information boss wondered how the
\nEFCC arrived at that conclusion.<\/p>\n

“To justify this allegation, the EFCC should make public the names of
\npeople they have arrested and prosecuted in Rivers State over money
\nlaundering. If this is not done, Magu’s statement would just be seen as
\nmere playing to the gallery to enjoy cheap publicity”, he said.<\/p>\n

He stated that the Rivers State Government will support EFCC to fight
\ncorruption within the ambit of the law, but will reject any attempt to
\nsubvert the rule of law in the state.<\/p>\n

The Commissioner advised the Acting Chairman of the Economic and
\nFinancial Crimes Commission (EFCC),\u00a0 Ibrahim\u00a0 Magu to be patient and
\ndesist from the illegality of arrogating to himself the judicial powers
\nof courts.<\/p>\n

“The EFCC should desist from self-help and unnecessary political
\npropaganda,\u00a0 as it will yield no results, ” he stated.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
