ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) has applauded the decision of the
\npolitical leadership of the South West of Nigeria to formulate a
\nhome-made security strategy to tackle the increasing threats to the
\nsecurity of lives and property of law abiding citizens of their
\nfederating units.<\/p>\n

“The rest of the federating units such as South South; South East; North
\ncentral; North West; North East should similarly adopt same approach
\nbecause safeguarding the security of the citizenry and coming to the aid
\nof state institutions such as the Nigerian Police Force and other sister
\nsecurity institutions is the fundamental task of a good citizen. A
\nbottom to the top approa h to security and the formulation of security
\nstrategy to make the people the owners of the process is the best
\nintelligence gathering tool.”<\/p>\n

“We have watched with overwhelming excitement the collective resolve of
\nmillions of people of South West origin including millions of other law
\nabiding citizens of other segments of the Nigerian federation doing
\nlegitimate businesses in the South West, to collectively restore sanity,
\nsecurity and societal harmony in that part of the country that remains
\nthe industrial and commercial hub of the Nation, is highly commendable.
\nWe hereby urge governors of other federating units to follow the good
\nmodel of the South West joint security architecture, to bring about the
\nrestoration of security, peace, unity and economic advancements in all
\nother parts of Nigeria.”<\/p>\n

HURIWA recalled that the\u00a0 governors of the South West\u00a0 will on January
\n7, inaugurate Operation Amotekun, a security strategy meant to combat
\nkillings and kidnapping in the zone.<\/p>\n

The Ekiti State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Muyiwa Olumilua, who
\nsaid this in an interview with one of our correspondents on Wednesday,
\nsaid vehicles and equipment for the security outfit were ready.<\/p>\n

He stated that the inauguration was delayed by the need for all the
\nstates to be adequately ready in terms of meeting the requirements.<\/p>\n

HURIWA sated thus: “We commend the South West governors\u00a0 who had, in
\nSeptember, after a meeting in Akure, said they would set up Operation
\nAmotekun, following serial killings and kidnapping in the zone by Fulani
\nherdsmen. There is every justification for the establishment of this
\nmodel security architecture following a relentless gale of armed attacks
\nby bandits and suspected armed Fulani bandits.\u00a0 In June, gunmen,
\nsuspected to be herdsmen, killed Funke Olakunri, a daughter of the
\nAfenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti, on the Ondo-Ore road.There were
\ncases of kidnapping, including the abduction of a lecturer at the
\nObafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Prof. Olayinka Adegbehingbe, in
\nMay, at the Ikoyi\/Apomu junction of the Ibadan-Ife Expressway in Ikire,
\na border town between Osun and Oyo states. We in the organised human
\nrights community are happy that the governors have taken the bull by the
\nhorns and are now doing something to checkmate the rising scale of
\nthreats to the security of lives and property of the good people of the
\nSouth West.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
