President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja declared that the Federal
\nGovernment will sustain on-going efforts to end child marriage and
\nimprove girl-child education in the country.<\/p>\n

Commissioning the headquarters building of the Federal Ministry of Women
\nAffairs, President Buhari said it is the collective duty of all to
\nensure that mothers of today and tomorrow are educated, encouraged and
\nempowered.<\/p>\n

”Our quest is to ensure that concerns of women, children, and other
\nvulnerable citizens are given prominence and ultimately addressed.<\/p>\n

”A key priority of our government is the development and implementation
\nof social inclusion and economic sustenance policies. Our determination
\nis to ensure that economic growth and prosperity are felt by as wide a
\ncircle as possible.<\/p>\n

”In particular, we are laying great emphasis on education of the girl\u2013
\nchild. The high level of young girls who are out of school or unable to
\ncomplete school due to socio-economic pressures is disturbing and must
\nbe addressed.<\/p>\n

”The launch of the National Strategy to End Child Marriage, 2016 \u2013 2021
\nhas been the first critical step towards increasing children’s access to
\nquality all-round education and enhancing the retention of the
\ngirl-child in our schools, ” the President said.<\/p>\n

The Nigerian leader enjoined the Ministry to continue to champion and
\ncoordinate all matters relating to the plight of Nigerian women and the
\nmost vulnerable citizens, assuring Nigerian women of his continued
\nsupport and determination to see that the Ministry delivers on this
\nmandate.<\/p>\n

The President commended the ministry and other relevant government
\nagencies for positive contributions in reducing human trafficking
\nincidents and maternal mortality.<\/p>\n

”I expect this Ministry to maintain its lead coordinating role on
\nthese, and other women’s related matters working with State Governments
\nas well as our regional and international partners,” he said.<\/p>\n

In her remarks, the Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen,
\nthanked the President for recognising the role of women in
\nnation-building, and supporting the completion of the headquarters of
\nthe women ministry.<\/p>\n

The minister appealed to the President to appoint more women to
\nleadership positions in his government, assuring that her ministry will
\ndouble efforts to improve girl-child education in the country while
\nadvancing the welfare of vulnerable persons and women.<\/p>\n
