Fifty years after the Nigeria – Biafra war, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo<\/div>\n
\n
has lamented that the country has failed to take advantage of the
\nengineering and creative feats of Biafrans who manufactured weapons,
\nrefined crude oil through local technology, during the war.<\/p>\n

He described the war as a defining national tragedy, stressing that the
\nessence of the remembrance was to recall the bitter lessons of the war
\nand ensure it doesn’t happen again.<\/p>\n

Osinbajo who spoke at a town hall meeting on the 50th Anniversary of the
\nNigerian Civil War at the National War Museum, Umuahia, Abia State,
\norganized by the Ken Nnamani Center for Leadership and Development,
\nOsinbajo said the lessons of the war should assuage feelings of wrong
\nand make the country better.<\/p>\n

He, however, stated that in spite of the challenges and differences
\namong component units of the federation, Nigeria is better united as one
\nnation.<\/p>\n

The Vice President explained that the cost of resolving differences
\nthrough war was higher than resolving them peacefully.<\/p>\n

He advised Nigerians to not see the setbacks as reason for hopelessness,
\nstressing that the mission of the Buhari administration was to build a
\ngreat nation where the teeming youths would express their creative
\nenergy.<\/p>\n

“The most crucial task is to ensure that issues of fairness, justice and
\nequity are entrenched in the polity and ensure that the younger
\ngeneration does not see Nigeria with the lenses of the war era,”
\nOsinbajo said.<\/p>\n

He noted that the South East zone of the country was the center of
\nentrepreneurship and creativity as well as the hub of industrialization.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the occasion, Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie\u00a0 Ikpeazu
\ncalled for priority attention to areas under serious bombardment during
\nthe war in infrastructural development.<\/p>\n

He noted that events such as the town hall meeting should afford people
\nthe opportunity to terms with the injustice and injuries of the war for
\nreconciliation.<\/p>\n

Ikpeazu wondered why it was faster to achieve true reconciliation and
\nhealing of wounds of the Rwandan civil war than in Nigeria 50 years
\nafter.<\/p>\n

Convener of the town hall meeting and former Senate President, Chief Ken
\nNnamani, said it was through such meetings that enduring reconciliation
\ncould be achieved.<\/p>\n

According to Nnamani, “We should learn to refrain from the bitterness
\nand grievances of the past. Nigerians should exercise restraint in their
\nconduct to avoid a repeat of the past. Elders of my generation should
\nguide the younger generation aright. The town hall meeting cannot
\nresolve all the issues of the civil war but we must chart a new course
\nfor our nation.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
