The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), on Thursday (06\/02\/2020),<\/div>\n
\n
reiterated its commitment to maintain an enabling environment for
\nhealthy competition among telecommunications operators. The Commission
\nsaid this was necessary to ensure the provision of qualitative and
\nefficient services throughout the country in line with global best
\npractices.<\/p>\n

The Commission equally declared its commitment to regularly undertake
\ncost-based studies in order to ensure fair pricing of data and voice
\nservices in a bid to protect Nigerians and consumers in the telecom
\nsector.<\/p>\n

Josephine Amuwa, Director, Policy, Competition and Economic Analysis
\n(PCEA) Department, NCC gave the assurances in a remark made at a two-day
\nannual departmental retreat in Abuja.<\/p>\n

According to Amuwa, “the Policy Competition and Economic Analysis (PCEA)
\nDepartment has been directly responsible for approving, regulating, and
\nmonitoring of telecoms tariffs, assessing the level of competition in
\nthe industry, monitoring behaviour, measuring the performance of the
\nindustry as well as providing policy directions on topical issues
\nrelated to the ecosystem.”<\/p>\n

Speaking further, Amuwa reiterated that the PCEA Department can be
\nrelied upon for the provision of up-to-date statistical information on
\nvoice and data subscriptions, teledensity, as well as level of broadband
\npenetration.<\/p>\n

She explained that the determination of Mobile Termination Rate,
\nDetermination of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) Pricing,
\nand Determination of Mobile\u00a0 Number Portability transaction fees in the
\nsector were among key issues that the PCEA department handled recently.<\/p>\n

Amuwa, however, added that study was ongoing on retail broadband and
\ndata services toward efficient regulation. “The Department is fortified
\nto provide Nigerians with economic indication on telecommunications
\ncontribution to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” she added.<\/p>\n

Also speaking at the event, Sunday Atu, Head Competition and Tariff,
\nNCC, said evaluations were ongoing to ascertain areas to deepen
\ncompetition in the telecommunications market and to benchmarking these
\npractices against international best practices.<\/p>\n

Chukwuyere Ebere, a telecommunications lawyer, who spoke as a guest
\nspeaker at the retreat, charged the Commission to maintain the practice
\nof stakeholder consultation and benchmarking new regulatory policies
\nagainst International Telecommunication Standards.<\/p>\n

Ebere’s counsel resonated with Amuwa who had earlier noted that the
\nCommission never rested on its oars despite the fact that its
\nachievements had placed it as a foremost national telecom regulatory
\nagency in Africa.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
