{"id":71780,"date":"2020-02-14T06:01:41","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T05:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=71780"},"modified":"2020-02-14T06:01:41","modified_gmt":"2020-02-14T05:01:41","slug":"stop-playing-politics-with-ogoni-clean-up-wike-advises-the-federal-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/stop-playing-politics-with-ogoni-clean-up-wike-advises-the-federal-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Stop playing politics with Ogoni clean up, Wike advises the Federal Government"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1658474394791863172\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">\nRivers State Governor,\u00a0 Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the Ogoni<br \/>\nclean up exercise can only succeed when the Federal Government stops<br \/>\nplaying politics with the programme.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during a Courtesy Visit by the Minister of Environment,\u00a0 Dr<br \/>\nMohammad Mahmood Abubakar on Thursday at the Government House Port<br \/>\nHarcourt,\u00a0 Governor Wike urged the Federal Government to come with the<br \/>\nterms for the implementation of the Ogoni Clean up Exercise as<br \/>\nrecommended by the UNEP Report.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Wike noted\u00a0 that since 2016 when the Ogoni Clean up Exercise<br \/>\nwas flagged off, no tangible milestone has been achieved.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8221; I am not happy that the Rivers State Government is not part<br \/>\nof the clean up exercise. Nobody has ever briefed the State Government.<br \/>\nThe programme has been politicised&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The only way the programme will work is when we all work together. The<br \/>\nprogramme is not working because they see it as politics. They are using<br \/>\nunqualified contractors to execute the project.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Governor said rather than tell the world the level of success<br \/>\nattained, the Federal Government continues to circulate same old story<br \/>\nof handing over remediation sites to contractors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Its unfortunate that no tangible effort has been achieved. Handing over<br \/>\nremediation site to contractors does not mean the work has been done.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since 2016 till date, its the same story because the people are from<br \/>\nthis part of the country. Its unfortunate. The Federal Government is<br \/>\nsupposed to come up and say that they have been able to achieve about<br \/>\n30% of the cleanup in Ogoniland.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What I want to hear is we have achieved about 30%, we have achieved<br \/>\nabout 40% of the cleanup. The Federal Government should tell the people<br \/>\nif they are not ready to clean up of Ogoniland&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He regretted that some Ogoni sons are part of the challenges negating<br \/>\nthe successful clean up of Ogoniland.\u00a0 He said Ogoni people working with<br \/>\nthe exercise should tell the world if they are satisfied with the<br \/>\nprogramme.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I support the clean up, but the Rivers State Government will not do<br \/>\nwhat it doesn&#8217;t know.\u00a0 Also the lack of clean up of Ogoniland is caused<br \/>\nby Ogoni sons and daughters because of politics. I challenge Ogoni sons<br \/>\nto tell the world if they are satisfied with the cleanup exercise in<br \/>\nOgoniland&#8221; he said<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the Minister of Environment, Dr. Mohammad Mahmood Abubakar said<br \/>\nthey were in the state to handover additional thirty-six remediation<br \/>\nsites to contractors as part of the Clean up Exercise.<\/p>\n<p>He lauded the Rivers State Governor for demonstrating strong commitment<br \/>\nfor the Ogoni Clean up Exercise since the inception of the programme in<br \/>\n2016.<\/p>\n<p>He added that four hundred women in the area will also be trained as<br \/>\npart of the cleanup exercise at the Rivers State Songhai Farm.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1658474987557729707\" class=\"mail-message\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rivers State Governor,\u00a0 Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the Ogoni clean up exercise can only succeed when the Federal Government stops playing politics with the programme.
