1.\u200bI welcome you all to this briefing. As you are aware, the Supreme Court of Nigeria yesterday\u00a0delivered a judgement in a pre-election suit on the Bayelsa State Governorship election held on 16th\u00a0November 2019. The Commission has\u00a0received the Certified True Copy\u00a0(CTC)\u00a0of the judgement of the apex court\u00a0which disqualified\u00a0the Deputy Governorship candidate\u00a0and vitiated the joint ticketof the party earlier declared winner\u00a0in the election. The Court\u00a0also\u00a0ordered the Commission to\u00a0\u201c\u2026declare as winner of the Governorship election in Bayelsa State the candidate with the highest number of lawful votes cast with the requisite constitutional (or geographical spread)\u201d.<\/p>\n

\n

2.\u200bIn compliance with the orders of the Supreme Court, the Commission met\u00a0this morning\u00a0and reviewed the result of the election in which 45 political parties contested. Without the votes scored by the All Progressives Congress (APC),\u00a0whose candidates were deemed not to have participated in the election,\u00a0the total number of\u00a0lawful and\u00a0valid votes cast in the election\u00a0now\u00a0stand at 146,999. Out of this figure, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)\u00a0scored the highest number of lawful votes with143,172. Similarly, the Party\u00a0has\u00a0scored more than 25% of the\u00a0lawful\u00a0votes cast in all the eight (8) Local Government Areas of the State.<\/p>\n

\n

3.\u200bFurthermore, the total number of registered voters in places where election was not held or cancelled as a result of sundry violations is 90,822. The candidate of the Accord party has the next highest\u00a0score with\u00a01,339 votes. The margin of lead\u00a0between the\u00a0candidates of the\u00a0PDP and\u00a0the\u00a0Accord party\u00a0is\u00a0141,833 votes. With this outcome, the election is conclusive at first ballot.<\/p>\n

\n

4.\u200bConsequently, Senator Douye Diri\u00a0AND Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo\u00a0of the PDP are hereby declared winners and returned elected as Governor and Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State respectively.<\/p>\n

5.\u200bThe detailed\u00a0result will be shared with you at this briefing and uploaded on the Commission\u2019s\u00a0website and\u00a0social media platforms shortly.<\/p>\n

6.\u200bThe Commission is aware that the tenure of the incumbent Governor of Bayelsa State ends\u00a0at midnight today\u00a0Friday 14th\u00a0February 2020. Therefore, in fulfilment of the requirement of\u00a0Section 75 of\u00a0the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), the Certificates of\u00a0Return to the Governor and Deputy Governor-elect will be presented\u00a0to them immediately as ordered by the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n
